9/11 - 11 years on

Not quite the 11th over in UK or USA, but here in New Zealand it is. It's strange that it is 11 years, it's gone so quickly yet I'm still intrigued by all the conspiracy theories.

lostalex 10-09-2012 05:18 PM

Huge credit to Bush and Obama for keeping us safe for 11 years now.

The conspiracy theories go nowhere. I was interested at first (i love a good conspiracy theory) but there's nothing to them. With all the hackers, and wikileaks, etc... and still nothing... looks like there's nothing to it.

Lee. 10-09-2012 05:19 PM

Can't believe that happened 11 years ago! Still can't really believe it happened at all actually!

lostalex 10-09-2012 05:21 PM

They really need to hurry up and finnish that new tower though. The UK finished the shard this year and the Shard was started AFTER the new WTC right? New York needs to get their ass in gear on that tower.

There have been much worse things happen in recent times. Don't know why we have this big media takeover every year over it. Because it happened in a white western country perhaps?

ummm, lots of black people died on 9/11 too. The USA is not like Japan or China or most African countries where most everyone is 1 race. In fact New York is probably the most racially diverse place on the planet.

I can't think of anything worse.. not in recent years anyway. 9/11 affected me in a big way... nothing else has since. Obviously the London bombings were dreadful, but I don't think I'll ever cone to terms with seeing those planes hit, then the people jumping to their death, then the towers falling. Horrific doesn't even begin to describe it for me.

What about what's going on in Syria?

a million people murdered by the US? link plzzz?

The vast majority of civilian deaths in Afghanistan have been by the Taliban and Al-queda, not the US led Coalition.

It's certainly not fair to use the entire death toll against the US. How many Hospitals has the US built there? how many has al queda built?

I guess we don't get credit for the hundreds of thousands of lives that we've saved, right?

I was more alluding to the fact it happened in America.

I was 17. I still remember being at a pub in Brighton on a college art course watching it all happen live on tv.

I agree, that's why we are at war with those organized murderers. that's why we hunt them down.

I don't think the significance of 9/11 is really in the death toll, it's more the fact that it shattered ideas about Western security and invincibilty, and it completely changed global relations for good pretty much. I'd say all the civilians who've died in Iraq, in Afghanistan, are just as much victims of 9/11 as the Americans that died that day

More americans have died in Iraq as a result of the invasion than died on 9/11 and they had nothing to do with it WAY TO GO!

There are horrible things happening the world over, but to me 9/11 was the most horrific thing I've lived through and witnessed. I think about it a lot yet don't think I'll ever really accept everything that happened that day.

And tbh I think on the anniversary of 9/11, I think this thread should one of remembrance and empathy, nor an excuse for people to ask why it gets so much attention or try and diminish its importance by comparing it with other tragedies.

Nobody has ever said its the only bad thing to have ever happened in the world, but those 3000 people deserve respect and remembrance.

lostalex 10-09-2012 05:43 PM

I think 9/11 is different from the violence in rest of the world because it was so shocking and so extreme. In the same what that there are murders everyday in the US, but they don't get the same reaction from the media as the Batman Shooting.

In the same way that other people died in traffic accidents in Paris on the same day as Princess Di, but you don't know their names.

Those Americans weren't innocent civilians completely unaware and that had absolutely nothing to do with the conflict. The mass murder of civilians in a huge event is not the same as the deaths of soldiers in a war fought over many years.
