Australia to kill sharks threatening beachgoers

Western Australia has set out measures aimed at reducing the risk of shark attacks at the state's beaches, after a string of deadly incidents.

The A$6.85m ($7.12m, £4.41m) package includes funding for catching and if necessary killing sharks "posing an imminent threat" to beachgoers.

Other funding is allocated to tagging and research programmes.

There have been six shark attacks on swimmers and surfers in the state this year, five of them fatal.

The most recent was last month, when a man suffered abdomen and arm injuries in an attack about 1,000km (600 miles) north of state capital Perth.

The series of attacks has prompted calls for a shark cull, but the authorities have ruled out that option following protests from environmental groups.

Several of the recent attacks are believed to have involved great white sharks, which are protected.

In the past, fisheries authorities had only sought to kill great whites in response to an attack.

Now they would be allowed to take "proactive action" if a shark presented an imminent threat to people, a statement said.

Tagging systems that included the use of real-time GPS tracking would also be funded, as would more research, jet skis for lifesaving and a community awareness programme.

"These new measures will not only help us to understand the behaviour of sharks but also offer beachgoers greater protection and confidence as we head into summer," State Premier Colin Barnett said in the statement.

This angers me, if people choose to go into shark territory then they have to live with the risk. Poor sharks being killed for stupid people to splash around.

I agree ,they live in the waters we don't,we really want EVERYTHING don't we,it angers me too that things cant live in peace in their OWN habitat without us deciding to have it as our own.:nono:

Agreed. Its a risk you take, especially swimming somewhere like Australia.

:bored: Honestly, they can't just expect the sharks to know the difference between a human and anything else, if a person dies or is injured by a shark then it's their own fault.

It does say they'll only kill them if people are in imminent danger and as a last resort, human lives are more important than shark ones

If the sharks' preservation instincts don't kick in and they realise humans = imminent death then they deserve to be extinct. Most animals are smart enough to not hunt something that's above them on the food chain.

thats not nice :hmph: the sharks got there first so the humans need to gtfo and swim in a pool or something instead of the sea

can we do this with wasps though please

i would happily stand by and watch as every wasp on the planet was burned to death or s/t

Seriously though, the suggestion of killing sharks just so some can swim is pretty ridiculous.

The World would not be any different if there were no Great White sharks, except a few more people would have all their limbs and people would be able to swim without the threat of being eaten.
