Kay Burley criticised for 'cruel' April Jones news report

Kay Burley has been criticised after telling a member of the Machynlleth community live on air that the search for April Jones has now become a murder inquiry.

The Sky News host was approached by two search volunteers during her report, one of whom was yet to be told the news that Mark Bridger had been arrested on suspicion of the 5-year-old's murder.

"They [the police] don't expect to find her alive," Burley said. "I'm sorry to have to tell you in circumstances like this... would you like to say anything?"

Labour MP Tom Watson tweeted: "Kay Burley: Insensitive bordering on cruel. Is breaking news so important that you have to forget your humanity?"

Many other Twitter users also expressed their dismay at Burley's controversial actions, with Ofcom confirming that it has already received viewer complaints.

Burley previously came under fire in 2010 for making Peter Andre cry after probing him about Katie Price's then-new husband Alex Reid and the role he would play in Andre's children's lives.

time for ofcom to act

Good

I don't think what she did was wrong? She's a news reporter and what the police announced constitutes news. It wasn't insensitive at all, they would have found out in a matter of minutes anyway

Black Dagger 05-10-2012 04:14 PM

She was doing her job? Yes it might not be the most pleasant story in the world, but she's being a reporter, it's in her description to be.

Jake. 05-10-2012 04:16 PM

Load of bollocks really

King Gizzard 05-10-2012 04:17 PM

She deserves it for all the other countless times

Marc 05-10-2012 04:18 PM

It's not as if she wanted to tell them, had she said 'oh I think you should find out yourself' they would have just pursued her about it and the woman did ask what the recent news was

joeysteele 05-10-2012 04:18 PM

I don't think she should be sacked for this matter,I do though find her a very cold individual.

Marc 05-10-2012 04:19 PM

I think all reporters have a cold side tbh

I agree, they have, I haven't though come across much sensitivity or warmth from Kay all the times I have seen her on anything, even when she did Dancing on Ice.

However, on this matter, the Police are the ones who opened the door to this being called a murder inquiry now since they announced they had now arrested the guy on suspicion of murder, so I cannot see what she has really done wrong as to this issue.

This is the same woman who asked the partner of a murderer if they thought he would have done it if they got more sex at home...right?

I dont remember the exact case or anything, but that stood out for me...

edit. yes it was

Cannot stand this woman or her style of reporting :bored:

I agree with you, Vicky.

She is an awful, insensitive person, even as far as reporters go. She seems to thrive on and relish bad news in her reporting. It would be nice if she showed at least a little bit of compassion, but I doubt that ever is going to happen. I hope she does get sacked.

MTVN 05-10-2012 05:17 PM

^ Ok that question there is very stupid

Don't think she did much wrong here though

Saph 05-10-2012 05:30 PM

Never heard of her but I don't really see what she did wrong

She has done nothing wrong in the eyes of the law, but it was definitely insensitive I would say. Imagine being told of the death of someone close to you with the cameras rolling and a microphone shoved in your face, waiting for a reaction? Some things should just remain private without someone trying to get footage for an exclusive.

Shaun 05-10-2012 05:45 PM

I'd rather she were a duffel bag

I don't think she was just trying to get footage for an exclusive though, she was under the impression they were aware of the latest update, once it turned out they weren't she was in a difficult position and they clearly wanted to know the latest, the police had already made it official so it's not like it was secret information and there wasn't exactly a good way she could avoid telling them

Really? I read that "She confirmed the news after one of the women told her that she had not heard the latest updates on the search."

Telegraph

At the 1.18 mark in the video she says "ok I didn't know you hadn't heard" and they both look at her expectantly putting her in a difficult position, bit of a cock up on their part for thinking the two women were aware of the latest but not particularly insensitive I don't think

Livia 05-10-2012 06:15 PM

She's as subtle as an air raid. Dreadful woman...

The woman in the high vis jacket states that she hasn't heard the latest news, asks what has happened, and Kay proceeds to tell her live on air. Yes she was in a position because the woman did not know, but then maybe things like this should be checked before individuals are brought in front of the camera in cases like this. Especially moreso when reporting live. They could have cut to studio or something whilst they were being told. I know she had to make a snap decision, but in my opinion it was a poor one in hindsight.

Z 05-10-2012 06:33 PM

Pretty insensitive but it's not like they weren't going to find out anyway.

Tom4784 05-10-2012 06:38 PM

She's a cock but to be honest she didn't do much wrong here, maybe she should have been a little less cold with the delivery and left the follow up questions out of it but she just relayed the same information she was just given.
