Reducing the minimum voting age

Are you for or against the minimum age lowered to 16 to vote?
What are the pros and cons, working inbetweeners pay tax should they have a vote?

Jack_ 11-10-2012 12:48 PM

For, and I think you should be able to vote in general elections from the age of 16.

Kizzy 11-10-2012 03:18 PM

That is a seprate issue, this thread just looks at the pros and cons of reducing the voting age....
If thats ok with you arista?..

I do think 16 year olds should get the vote yes,it would be a good thing if it happened for this referendum and then fed down to all elections over the UK.

Considering that virtually every other age restriction is being increased to 18 - the compulsory school leaving age, the age at which one can smoke - it doesn't really make sense.

Buying ciggies has been 18 for a while i thought it was now 21 or is that booze?

Shaun 11-10-2012 04:41 PM

nope still 18 for both - ciggies only changed in 2007 so it's not that ancient

you just have to be IDed for both if "you look under 21". obv if you're 18 and with ID you can buy either.

thesheriff443 11-10-2012 04:41 PM

adults dont bother to vote beacuse its the same crap who ever you vote for.

I never said it was ancient, but 5 years is 5 years hahahaha
I can understand the changes for fags and booze but as far as i know voting is not detrimental to your health...yet.

Redway 11-10-2012 04:59 PM

What Shaun said. Everything else restricted to a particular age and above is 18 so why increase the voting age and not anything else? :conf2:

I see what you're saying but if we have 16-year-olds having sex then why nothing else? Because sex at such a young age tends not to be such a good idea. Just like booze. Or at least purportedly so.

I have no idea what you are talking about to be fair...
This thread is about voting, not smoking, drinking or getting your rocks off?
You can work and pay tax should you have the right to vote or not?

Redway 11-10-2012 05:12 PM

 yes, that's what I meant

I was referring to the 'booze' thing, which you say you support, but imo we have things almost just as destructive to 16-year-olds as alcohol.

I support???.
I am advocating no other decrease other than the voting age...
Is that clear enough? I don't know how to put it any clearer for you redway.

Redway 11-10-2012 05:33 PM

lol, we're clearly not going to agree on this :p it's nothing to fall out on anyway

MTVN 11-10-2012 06:15 PM

I think 16 year olds should definitely be able to vote in general elections, by the time the government that gets elected finishes its term they'll be 21 and will have been quite heavily affected by a lot of the policies that were carried out, only fair they should get their say in it
