why have british movies become sh*t?

Yes there were some classics back in the day, alfie, zulu, saturday night sunday morning, the eagle has landed, italian job, elephant man, alec guiness movies, spy who came in from the cold, ghandi, etc The last great brit movie was remains of the day, but that was american money.

These were all awesome movies, however all we seem to be left with now is a politically correct watered down james bond (copied the bourne series) and the rest is just awful...apart from that its just been endless (drab but money making) harry potter movies and mr bean

the only even half way memorable brit movies I can think of in the past few decades is billy elliott and twin town....really thats a pathetic sum total for the past few decades

why are brit films so rubbish>? they jokes, the stories, the characters are all so 1 dimensional, so predictable, the endless grim up north rubbish, the smug sanctimoniousness that seems to have become our number 1 characteristic seems to see ourselves as down to earth keeping it real , yet these movies are produced by mostly rich priveliged people making films about poor people.
this is the main problem. british movies lack heart...

we hate romance and we detest sentimentality...yet when we try a love movie we create love actually, which whilst popular in posh parts of england was the single worst piece of trash Ive ever witnessed....honestly debbie does dallas had more authenticity

american movies even the rubbish ones or the weird ones like napoleon dynamite or the cheesey sentimental brat pack movies or the war movies the comedies etc etc to me they offer enormous variety , experimentation, richness, depth but bets of all they are brave enough to go for ambiguity

british movies 99% go for the obvious, its just so damn dull....just look at our most famous celebrities, jordan and vinnie jones, theyre zero dimensional
what the hell happened to us? the nation of legendary actors and directors?
personally i think part of the issue is writers, like everything its elitist...the working class writers get zero opportunity so all we are left with is the tiny elitist oxbridge graduates giving us their view of the world

even dear old michael palin , whom I love, always refers every nation he visits , back to briatin and the british empire...we need new perspectives, new writers with truly original fresh ideas, wheres todays ian fleming?

Most movies are made by Multi-National Corporations, huge media conglomerates, so movies don't really have a nationality, do they?

New Zealand claims Lord of the Rings, Britain claims Harry Potter or James Bond, but these are still made by Hollywood based Media Corporations, so who knows what's what. Sony is Japanese but i don't think you'd call many of the movies they make Japanese, would you? Movie making is pretty much global now.

It would be nice if there was more support for local film making. But i doubt that will happen.

It's funding for the arts too, I suspect there are great writers and producers...But where's the financial backing?
I happen to think the 'grim up north stuff' is very good.
How much research have you done into the British film industry? There are still great low budget gems out there.
Without the marketing of the 'blockbusters' you have to sniff them out..
