Is this kindle fire hd worth £160? Is it any good compared to an ipad

I've only heard good things about it. There are other iPad alternatives that are meant to be fantastic too like the Nexus 10 and the Nexus 7. It might be worth giving those a look.

I must admit I do love my iPad, but I've heard good things about the Kindle HD
