Australia smokers given plain packs

Quote:

Australia has become the first country in the world to introduce plain packaging for cigarettes.

From now, all tobacco company logos and colours will be banned from packets.

They have been replaced by a dreary, uniform, green/brown, colour accompanied by a raft of anti-smoking messages and photographs.

The only concession to the tobacco companies is their name and the name of the brand variant in small print at the bottom of the box.

"This is the last gasp of a dying industry," declared Australia's Health Minister Tanya Plibersek.

Anne Jones of the anti-smoking group Ash (Action on Smoking and Health) agrees.

"Plain packaging has taken the personality away from the pack", she says.

"Once you take away all the colour coding and imagery and everything is standardised with massive health warnings, you really do de-glamorise the product."

Cigarette packets were practically the last platform for tobacco companies to advertise themselves.

Commercials on Australian television and radio were banned in 1976. Newspapers followed in 1989.

Sadly can see this happening over here soon :(

So I guess the debate is, do you think plain packets will put people off smoking?

Glenn. 01-12-2012 09:16 AM

No. The fact is, if someone wants to smoke then they will. This bollocks about "pretty" boxes is ridiculus. Underage smokers don't buy cigarettes because the box is pretty. It's because they think its cool to smoke.

InOne 01-12-2012 09:18 AM

I guess they're just trying to make them harder to get so no new smokers start. No logo and locked in the box of doom behind the co-op counter. Although I do think it's gonna make kids wonder even more what's behind the secret door of mystery...

Livia 01-12-2012 12:22 PM

I said this previously in another thread, but here I go again... Do people buy drugs because they come in nice packages with recognisable logos? No, they don't.

Cigarette packets dont really matter anymore anyway, they'll soon all be hidden behind shutters

BBfanUSA 01-12-2012 12:28 PM

This is very stupid,

I do hate smokers but with grusome pics to deter you from smoking and this. I feel like Smokers are discriminated against just a bit.

Most places I go in now they are already, it's only the small shops that have been given a few years to get it sorted.

InOne 01-12-2012 12:37 PM

Already a thread: http://www.thisisbigbrother.com/foru...d.php?t=216471

Redway 01-12-2012 12:42 PM

Has anyone walked into a shop and seen the cigarettes hidden behind a shutter yet?

InOne 01-12-2012 12:43 PM

See my reply to Chewy

Redway 01-12-2012 12:45 PM

Ah, right. Makes you wonder why people go to so much effort to try and regulate someone's life for them lol. It's ridiculous.

The whole argument annoys me so much. Why do you care what someone else chooses to put inside their body? Let them smoke all the nicotine they want...it's no one else's business.

In the Future you will be able to Only Smoke in your home,
as your smoke is toxic to others,

That's all right. The person can just walk away from me if they see me with a fag.

Yes. In every supermarket I've been in lately.

I predict the return of the cigarette case.

The vast majority of smokers are very aware of others and would never light up inconsiderately. I see no problem with people smoking outside. Cigarette smoke is no more toxic that carbon monoxide but I don't see a ban on driving cars coming in any time soon.

Once smokers are banned, how will they make up the £12 billion raised in the UK from tobacco tax in the last year? If people want to smoke that's their own business. God knows they pay enough for the privilege.

Why? Because you don't approve of their lifestyle? Let them do what they want - that's not for you or anyone else to decide.

And, no, it doesn't mean you have to be a total idiot and get yourself killed. You can just walk past me. Stop being pedantic about things. I hate people always moaning about smokers.

InOne 01-12-2012 03:44 PM

There's gonna be a point where people rebel. It's getting quite ridiculous now, it's just an excuse to raise the price on everything. Take the alcohol thing for example, pretending to care about our health when really it's about more money.
