Kansas City Chief NFL player kills himself

A player for the Kansas City Chiefs American football team has shot himself dead at the team's main stadium.

US media reports say the unnamed player was involved in an earlier shooting a few miles away.

He then reportedly went to a training facility at Kansas City's Arrowhead Stadium, where he killed himself.

The club confirmed that "an incident" had occurred at Arrowhead on Saturday. "We are co-operating with authorities in their investigation," it added.

Kansas City police spokesman Darin Snapp told AP news agency that authorities were told early on Saturday morning that a woman had been shot, five miles away from the Arrowhead complex.

Police were then called to the training facility, where they saw a black male in a car with a handgun to his head talking to two Chiefs officials.

They then heard a gunshot.

This is just horrible, I was reading my twitter news timeline and all of the sudden it came up.

Chiefs have been playing a horrible season at that point, I hope the mood in the locker room had nothing to do with it :(

Novo 01-12-2012 04:54 PM

Don't really watch that much American Football, was he a key player in the team or anything or more like a fringe player?

MTVN 01-12-2012 04:58 PM

Wasn't one of their best players or anything but he would start every game and was a decent line backer

Apparently the Chiefs general manager and head coach went out to talk to him in the car park and he thanked them for everything they'd done before he shot himself

Not sure what this will mean for their game tomorrow, NFL games are rarely cancelled but because of the circumstances it might have to be

BBfanUSA 01-12-2012 05:01 PM

I don't recognize the name.

Most players on the 55 man roster get to play. I'm looking up the roster right now to see what position he played. I think he must've played a little bit at least.

The Chiefs aren't the best team in the NFL in recent years but have a huge fanbase. They do have alot of history (won super bowl IV).

Also they have rarely cancelled games. Like MTVN said I won't be surprised if they delay the game depending on who's playing them (Carolina, who's horrible as well.)

Novo 01-12-2012 05:05 PM

The Atmosphere will be awful it if goes ahead and i can't imagine any of the staff or players would want it go ahead either

Kansas City Chiefs American football player Jovan Belcher has killed himself outside the team's main stadium.

Police said the 25-year-old first-team linebacker shot his girlfriend dead a few miles away, before driving to a training facility at Arrowhead Stadium.

He then shot himself in the car park in front of team officials.

The club confirmed the incident in a statement, adding: "We are co-operating with authorities in their investigation."

Kansas City police spokesman Darin Snapp told AP news agency that authorities were told early on Saturday that a woman had been shot five miles away from the Arrowhead complex.

The victim was later identified as Belcher's 22-year-old girlfriend, Kasandra Perkins.

The couple had a three-month-old daughter who was believed to have been in a nearby room at the time of the shooting. Belcher's mother had also been in the house and had called police.

According to local TV station KMBC 9, a friend of Kasandra Perkins said the couple had squabbled about an incident the previous night but there had been no evidence of any other problems between them.

Police were then called to the training facility, where they saw the player in a car holding a handgun to his head, talking to two Chiefs officials. They then heard a gunshot.

He had thanked the team's general manager and coach before shooting himself, police said.

In a statement, the Chiefs said the team would play its home game at Arrowhead against the Carolina Panthers as scheduled on Sunday, "after discussions between the league office, Head Coach Romeo Crennel and Chiefs team captains".

The Kansas City Chiefs have had a disappointing season so far, the BBC's Zoe Conway reports, with many fans calling for the sacking of the team's senior management.

A demonstration against the leadership due to be held on Sunday has been called off.

Outside Arrowhead stadium, Kansas City Mayor Sly James told reporters "there are a lot of people hurting,"

"There's a young baby right now without parents".

They will not be wearing armbands, Decals on helmets, anything to honor the slain player. Instead they'll have a moment of silence for Domestic Violence Victims.
