Not really sure I see what the huge fuss over long-range weaponry is. If this missile can only reach the tip of the philippines, and their only real enemy at the moment is South Korea, I would be focusing on their short-range capabilities.

North Korea is such a fascinating place, I wonder what it's like to live there?

They seem to have some fairly aggressive military policies. I've some South Korean friends, they say they don't really know much more about North Korea than anyone else, the whole place is a mystery.

King Gizzard 12-12-2012 12:41 AM

Yeah in hindsight this doesn't really seem like massive news in the grand scheme of things, it was just exploding on twitter

King Gizzard 12-12-2012 12:42 AM

This is one of the most fascinating things I've seen, shows the level of communism they have there

It's kinda sad that the whole country must seem like it the 1900s or something.

Kind of reminds me of The Hunger Games in a loose way. The Capital being the place where you get lights at night time, the rest of the country has to live a world apart from those 'lucky' enough to live in the capital.

I really don't think they're going to last much longer. Sooner or later the whole place is going to collapse in on itself. They have rolling blackouts, constant food shortages, and an economy that's so far down the toilet it's past the u-bend. These attacks that they've been launching are just acts of desperation imo.

It's such a bizarre country. I love reading up about it, and if I wasn't so wary of being arrested over there, then I'd definitely visit. It's the closest real world counterpart to Oceania in 1984.

I've watched a bunch of documentaries about the place, and there was one where these two American men visited the country. They were constantly bombarded with propaganda about how the 'American imperialists' oppress North Korea, how the 'Dear Leader' (Kim Jong Il was still in power when it was filmed) is so wonderful, and how perfect socialism is for everyone in the country.

And yeah they have this policy (called Songun I think?) which is where all resources are directed to military personnel first. That and this weird ideology called Juche which is essentially the idea that they should isolate themselves completely and focus on self reliance. I find it all very interesting. :blush2:

Watched a really good North Korea documentary last night, about an American soldier who defected there in the 60's while serving in South Korea and has lived there ever since

He claims to love his life there but he admits that he's in a privileged position and the government ensures he has everything he needs because he was useful for propaganda purposes in the years after the Korean war, another defector though who managed to return to the US claims his life was hell, impossible to really know anything for certain what life is like there I think

Nedusa 12-12-2012 03:46 PM

What if we've all been lied to for many years by the western press, what if actually North Korea is a utopian paradise a perfect example of how to live in harmony and peace with each other. What if the powers that be want to hide this truth from the outside world by painting North Korea as an evil Totalitarian Communist prison state where everyone is starving and living in hellish conditions. but actually nobody in NK wants to leave as they are happier where they are. ???

On the other hand.............!!!!

North Korea said Thursday that it plans to carry out a new nuclear test and further long-range rocket launches, all of which it said are a part of a new phase of confrontation with the United States.

I really want to go on one of those guided tours to north korea with koryo tours..
american people can't go, but british can, you have guards with you at every step and your hotel room is watched.. but still would be fascinating to see the propaganda the tour guides spew to you

the truth 24-01-2013 09:52 AM

whilst its morbidly fascinating I think Ill give that tour bus a miss. just have to make do with cuba for now

Nedusa 24-01-2013 12:07 PM

I fear North Korea may become the unwitting victim in a Geopolitical Power game involving US,Russia & China. Standing up to the US constantly threatening it with ICBM tests and Nuclear Warhead tests is not the best way forward.

The US may be backed into a corner at some point and decide to use some of its new generation of weapons to smack NK down. This would be risky but it might make NK realise if you keep threatening the Big boys eventually you will get slapped. Plus it will create an opportunity for the US to showcase its current Military Hardware.....!!!!

smeagol 24-01-2013 03:27 PM

its crazy britain america china everybody has fought there. yet still they remain and remain a threat. thats why south korea are always on alert,
shouldn't need weapons these days unless your lookin to use them

plus this is why the weather is buggered up cause all these countries firing of weapons underground in the sky and out to sea all the time.
