Ooh this could descend into chaos.

Stu 14-12-2012 05:25 PM

Again?

Killing is wrong. Long stretches of incarceration with an attempt at rehabilitation is super duper. I watched this one episode of Prison Wives where the guy inside became a Buddhist. They didn't let him out so he's still doing life but you know ... he bettered his soul.

There is also this prevailing myth that it would save money if we just chopped peoples heads off. No it wouldn't. There is a lot of red tape involved. Capital punishment is an incredibly costly endeavor. It takes years and years and millions of dollars to get it through the judicial system.

I don't think it's healthy for culture to be legally sanctioning the killing of another human being. It's just not good. And I won't be told stand in the family of the victims shoes because guess what ... our world as harsh as it sounds can't always be worked from such an intense personal perspective.

Above all else it's the idea that we would be giving these rolling news addicted, blood lust nutters the satisfaction of it that ticks me off the most. Those people just want a news story to salivate over. They're killing the bad guys! GO ENGLAND!

I looked back and the last one on this topic was Feb. Probably will end up the same people saying the same things.

I have always been against the death penalty but earlier this year in a fun election thing on here,I was persuaded that in some cases I could support it, especially for child killers and those who carry out multiple murders.

I would support loads of conditions for it though and it must be only as a very last resort and after all appeals had been exhausted.
I would also only support it as long as there were a long list of boxes to be ticked and that every box had to be ticked for it to even to be considered.

It would never be a good thing to have but I have got fed up of people abusing, physically and/or sexually Children then killing them knowing all they will get is a life sentence and loss of liberty.
I cannot see ant Govt bringing back the death penalty in any circumstances but I now hold the view I could support it in very extreme and likely extremely rare situations now.

Never. Here's a concise answer for you, since this has been discussed numerous times:

It's riddled with hypocrisy, is barbaric, easy, not to mention blood-thirsty, panders to nutjobs and tabloids, and has no intelligent thought put into it whatsoever.

SocietyIsRuined 14-12-2012 06:05 PM

Against the death penalty but all for testing various medicines/products on lifers in the same way we do to animals. We would get better results too.

Livia 14-12-2012 06:28 PM

I think there should be a referendum and go with the majority.

Kazanne 14-12-2012 06:46 PM

I put option 4 (only in exeptional circumstances)personally there are only a few people I wanted to see dead as justice for a crime, but the ones I chose surely do not deserve to walk this earth, they would be no loss.it wont come back anyway.so it's just thoughts.

Jesus. 14-12-2012 06:53 PM

Under no circumstances should a government be allowed to murder it's people. Regardless of the crime.

King Gizzard 14-12-2012 07:07 PM

Although some cases are extremely tempting to want death upon that person, never should it be brought back..think about murderers on life sentences, alot of those would kill themselves if they could. They'd snap your hand off if they were given the death penalty (not all, but quite alot)

Why would you want to give someone the easy way out? Harsher prisons are what's needed...

and yeah..this kind of is just the same stuff as the last time we had this topic Lol

I agree and also think though in a referendum of the people that there would be an overwhelming vote in support of bringing capital punishment back for at least some murder crimes.

I still though think that even after such a referendum,Politicians should vote as to their consciences in a free vote always on this issue.

Niall 14-12-2012 07:44 PM

It's wrong in any situation. I don't care how depraved the crime, ending another person's life is just wrong in any circumstance. It's state-sponsored murder. We're a modern, civilised society, and to have such barbaric consequences for crime would just be out of place. I mean, who are we to decide who lives and dies?

Moreover, what if there's a miscarriage of justice? What if the conviction is wrong and a person is [insert death penalty type here] for such crimes? It's a risk I wouldn't like to take, the Derek Bentley case shows how devastating it can be for family members of the 'convict'.

Besides a life term in prison would be far more difficult to stomach than death.

InOne 14-12-2012 07:48 PM

I wonder how many people would go watch a public beheading these days

Vanessa 14-12-2012 07:49 PM

I'm against it. It's wrong and it doesn't solve anything.

Kazanne 14-12-2012 07:50 PM

IF life meant life, then I dont think the death penalty would be an issue,8 years is naff all for the taking of someones life.

InOne 14-12-2012 07:51 PM

Who got 8 years for murder?

Nedusa 15-12-2012 07:01 AM

I could never vote for the return of the Death penalty under any circumstances. Don't get me wrong there are people out there that commit acts of savage brutality and by all rights should be slowly tortured before being executed. But I cannot advocate state sponsored murder, it reduces us as a nation to the level of the murderer and takes our society back 200 years. We have moved forward and should find other ways to punish offenders of this type. Life imprisonment should mean life, hard labour should mean hard labour.

People who commit the gravest of crimes who are certifiable should never ever be allowed back out ie child murderers, Paedophiles etc..

But to bring back the Hangman is not the answer especially as innocent people do sometimes get executed by mistake..
