Muppets sequel to star Ricky Gervais

Ricky Gervais has announced he is going to star in the next Muppets film.

The comedian tweeted that he will be playing the lead in Disney's sequel to the 2011 movie The Muppets.

He joked: "I have the biggest trailer but Kermit will spend some time in my sink."

The producers of The Muppets, Walt Disney Pictures, have not announced the cast but Ricky Gervais' agent has confirmed he will play a role.

The film is due to start production in January 2013 and will be the first lead role for Ricky Gervais in a feature film since The Invention of Lying in 2009.

Ricky Gervais filmed a cameo appearance for The Muppets, but the scene was cut.

The first film took more than $150m worldwide and won an Oscar for best song at the 2012 Academy Awards.

Man or Muppet was written by the Flight of the Conchords actor Bret McKenzie.

"[Creator] Jim Henson said if the music's too good, it's not right," McKenzie said at the time. "So I took that to heart and kept the songs slightly shambolic.

"Miss Piggy can't sing very high or very low, otherwise she loses the sound of Miss Piggy."

Can't stand his voice at all. No doubt he will ruin the movie.

King Gizzard 19-12-2012 07:58 PM

Basically the opposite kind of humour as what the muppets are about :suspect:

Shaun 19-12-2012 08:18 PM

eh he's pretty much the main "comedian meeting loads of celebrities" kind of person going, I can see where it's heading

Kizzy 19-12-2012 08:51 PM

The muppets don't want to be sullied by being associated with Gervais!... Trust me.

Ninastar 19-12-2012 09:01 PM

he's hilarious with Elmo, so I imagine he will be good with these ( even though i hate the muppets)

Stu 20-12-2012 03:33 PM

He was terrible until the office and he's been terrible ever since.

Extras > you

and hosting the globes > you

the truth 20-12-2012 05:36 PM

another show he will drag down. he'll be telling is the muppets have strings and hands up them next, what a bore

Stu 21-12-2012 05:04 PM

Extras gets a pass. It must be hell coming up with material to host an awards show.

good ponit

I also don't really get the appeal with Jason Segel (the guy from the first film)... I did enjoy the film, but I just don't find him funny. He's more of a generic 'nice guy' they cast for rom coms... same as Owen Wilson (but at least he's done some funny films)

Tom4784 22-12-2012 02:04 PM

I don't think he's a good fit for it at all, The Muppet films should be all about the Muppets and Gervais has a tendency to make everything he does about him. The human lead in these films is always a throw away part anyway so to be honest someone like Neil Patrick Harris would fit better then Ricky Gervais.
