Rape happens all around the world you dick

I don't know the details of this story, but I'd guess it's probably something to do with the caste system. I bet it leaves a lot of men unable to find a woman because of this, so the frustration builds up.

Barbaric nation? Rape happens everywhere, dear.

Kizzy 28-12-2012 05:36 PM

Yes shaun we know this, however the autorities are guilty of barbaric response to the rape of women. The death of a police officer following protests shows that the public may wish laws to change to protect women.

Those attitudes are hardly unique to "barbaric" countries though, there's been controversy here after leading figures have said women shouldn't dress so skimpily if they didn't want to be raped, remember the slutwalk protests?

I'm sure there might be a problem with the attitudes to women among some figures if authority in India, but that doesn't mean we should take this orientalist view of India as a "barbaric" and savage nation as opposed to us civilised westerners for whom things like this aren't a problem

Shaun 28-12-2012 05:48 PM

Corruption in the criminal system and cover-ups when it comes to rape? Yeah there's been nothing like that exposed this year in the UK.

I always find it shocking when people say that, after all women can do whatever they want, and rapists like to use it as an excuse so they get people calling the woman a *****, it's disgraceful.

And I agree that we're no better than India for rape, in fact I think it's more dangerous for a woman in the UK when it's night time as the freaks come out, but the Indian Governments need to take rape more seriously.

Livia 28-12-2012 05:55 PM

You cannot equate stuff that happens in the UK to stuff that happens in India. Anyone who's ever spent any time in India will tell you that. Firstly there's the caste system, which makes the good old British class system look like a workers' collective. The there's the fact that in the poorest, less developed parts of India women are very much second class citizens and the property of men.

The woman in the first story was gang raped on a bus then had an iron bar pushed so far up inside her that it caused massive internal injuries so severe she has been reported as "fighting for her life". In this country there would have been a bloody outcry. In India, Police are still trying to get rape victims to drop charges.

There was an outcry over the comments of an individual yes, it was not a general consensus of the establishment.
slutwalk went far and wide, which is why we now see the violence erupting over the attitudes towards sexual violence.
For the citizens of a developing country it is entirely understandable they would rally against these barbaric responses.
Mine is not a western view but a humanist one.

Don't violent protests which have led to one police officer dead not amount to an outcry?

Yes... it does. And despite that, as I said earlier, still the Indian police are trying to convince rape victims to drop the charges.

Nedusa 28-12-2012 10:07 PM

This story stinks , I don't care if this offence happened in India , Rape is rape is rape . Because it happened in a poor underdeveloped country with a strange caste system doesn't make it any less of a crime.

And the Indian Policemen who are dragging their feet on this case should all be charged with perverting the course of justice and jailed accordingly. I'm sick of reading about stories where crimes are committed but the country is underdeveloped and the crime is not treated with the severity it deserves.

rip to her

This story just gets worse apparently the woman was coming home on a bus with a friend when she was attacked by up to 6 strangers and gang raped and viciously assaulted with iron bars being used in her genitals. The Indian Govt were so shocked by the national outrage that followed , they flew the woman out of the country to Singapore . The woman's injurious were too severe and she died yesterday.

This type of unprovoked rape is actually quite common in India and is condoned to a degree by the Indian authorities . This sickening episode will hopefully result in a change in the public conscience to stamp out this type of behaviour . And not before time...!!!

Agreed. And the posters Arista has shown, with the English dialogue, as most foreign nations tend to do when they no longer respect their current government (or getting a message through to the English speaking democracies of the world...) Really, it's almost impossible to read a news article and not be physically ill. Been feeling way too ill these days. http://i395.photobucket.com/albums/p...tial/angry.gif
