Hirst Designs Brit Award With His Famous Spots

Artist Damien Hirst has given the Brit Award a makeover with his signature design of multicoloured dots.Hirst has put his own stamp on the prize as the latest figure to stylise the figurine, which he has used in many of his well-known artworks.

His spots have been applied to numerous canvases and even a car over the years.Hirst follows Dame Vivienne Westwood and Sir Peter Blake in giving the statuette a makeover, and said he had been "honoured" to be asked.

"It has become such an iconic award, I love the Brits," he said.Hirst's exhibition at Tate Modern last year was the most popular solo show ever staged at the gallery, attracting around 463,000 visitors, and helping the venue to record numbers through its doors.

The award has been unveiled ahead of tonight's announcement of the Brits shortlists.Tom Odell, the winner of this year's critics' choice prize, will get his hands on the trophy first when the 2012 winner Emeli Sande hands over the prize at the launch in London's Savoy Hotel.

Brits chairman David Joseph said: "Damien is truly one of the most important British artists and his reimagining of the statue will make winning a 2013 Brits an even more special proposition."

I want one.

I like it, but he's really not that interesting an artist. Splitting animals in half and putting diamonds on skulls is pure shock tactics and totally artless.

Reminds me of my sisters house, she has all multicoloured polka dot stuff in her kitchen. It looks cheap and tacky and so does this

Kizzy 10-01-2013 03:11 AM

Yep and what does he have against butterflies?....
I'm not a fan.

King Gizzard 10-01-2013 03:12 AM

anyway, it doesn't take hiring a big 'artist' to put spots on an award surely :suspect: Might as well get a work experience to paint them red and hey presto

Imagine being so excited winning best British breakthrough artist of the year. And then imagine being given that tube of Smarties shaped like a man. I don't know who Damien Hirst is but hes gonna ruin a dream in a month.
