IT SHOULD have been a match made in heaven, or more accurately, a match made in the offices of several plastic surgeons. But when a living Barbie doll finally came face-to-face with a living Ken doll, it wasn’t sparks that flew, but insults.

The Sun reports that 23-year-old Valeria Lukyanova, who is the "spitting image" of Mattel’s famous doll, met Justin Jedlica, a 32-year-old American who looks just like Barbie’s "perfectly toned" partner Ken, at a New York photo-shoot.

But the session was far from pretty. Lukyanova and Jedlica "immediately fell out and started a catty slanging match about make-up and cosmetic operations," the paper says.

The dispute revealed two very different approaches to the art of making yourself look like someone or, in this case, something else.

Jedlica has spent about £70,000 on a series of surgical procedures that erased most traces of Justin and added large quantities of Ken. Lukyanova, who is from the Ukraine, insists she has had just “one” surgical procedure – breast implants - and achieves her Barbie-ness using a wig and industrial quantities of make-up.

Jedlica was not impressed by the non-surgical route, sniffing: “Drag queens have put on the same illusions for years”. Lukyanova hit back by saying: “He would do better not to comment on who is plastic and who is not. I think he is handsome man – but he overdid his lips”.

Perhaps the lack of romance should not have come as a complete surprise because rumours about Ken’s sexuality have dogged the handsome doll for years.

In June last year, Vancouver-based photographer Dina Goldstein unveiled a series of images depicting the world’s most famous dolls – not Lukyanova and Jedlica, but the actual dolls - living a “miserable life” together. The ten-part photo series shows Ken wearing a pair of pink stilettos and fantasising about a bare-chested infantryman in bed. Not surprisingly, Barbie’s suspicions are “aroused”.
