Yoko Ono tweets John Lennon's bloodied glasses...
 

Yoko Ono, the artist and wife of former Beatle John Lennon has entered the gun control laws debate in the US by posting a personal photograph of the dead rock star's blood-spattered glasses on Twitter.

On what would have been the couple's 44th wedding anniversary, the 79-year-old tweeted the image in several posts and called for an end to gun violence.

She said: "Over 1,057,000 people have been killed by guns in the USA since John Lennon was shot and killed on 8 Dec 1980.

"31,537 people are killed by guns in the USA every year. We are turning this beautiful country into war zone.

"Together, let's bring back America, the green land of peace.

"The death of a loved one is a hollowing experience. After 33 years our son Sean and I still miss him. Yoko Ono Lennon."

Ono and Lennon were married in Gibraltar on March 20, 1969, and went on honeymoon to Amsterdam where they famously campaigned for peace by spending an entire week in bed.

Lennon was murdered outside their New York apartment in 1980.

The 40-year-old was shot four times in the back by Mark Chapman who had asked for his autograph only hours before he laid in wait and killed him.

The recent calls for tougher gun control laws in the States follows the December 14 mass shooting that killed 20 schoolchildren and six adults in Newtown, Connecticut - and the Aurora theatre massacre in Denver last summer which claimed 12 lives

Its a really powerful picture theres no denying it...I don't think she should have posted it on twitter though.

I think her using it as an album cover was also in bad taste.

Agree with her sentiments as to why she did this but I really don't think it is an appropriate way to do so the way she has chosen to.

If she's making a point about gun violence then I don't really see a lot wrong. It's not as though he was shot a couple of weeks ago.

Celebrity gets more attention, and John Lennon will forever have more of a mystique around him than most. It's a really hot issue in the US at the moment as weak politicians are being bullied by the NRA as they try to pass new gun regulations, so the timing of this is really appropriate.

Me too, it's a little morbid I guess but it happened so long ago and if it helps with gun control in the states then fair dues.
