The North Korea Situation: should we be worried?

I find the ongoing North Korea saga very fascinating. Personally, I think it is all a show. I think Kim Jong Un is trying to enforce his power both nationally and internationally. It has been suspected that many in North Korea do not think that Kim Jong Un will live up to the legacy of Kim Jong-il(if you can call it that). Threatening war is a way that Un can show off his power and show his people that he will not be complacent.

That being said, one can't just dismiss North Korea. They are too much a wild card for that. If they attack South Korea, I find it impossible that it would also not lead to the United States and others entering the war.

Also what would China's obligation to North Korea be. China lately has been backing off more and more from North Korea, personally I do not think they follow North Korea into war, but you never know.

Is there any way to ease the tension between North and South Korea or is this going to remain a problem for years on end. It's hard to believe that war between the two will never happen, the stalemate will never last forever.

What do the people think?

I'm not sure they'll go for all-out attack but both sides of the border seem to have a habit of reacting strongly to the slightest excursion over territory lines... I think either side could start it in all honesty.

I'm worried in general as I don't like it when a country is so secretive like that in this day and age.

Kim Jong Un is just putting on a show of power I think, I don't think it will lead to anything.

I think worrying is a waste of time, if you can change what you are worried about, stop wasting the energy and go change it. If you cant change it then dont waste the time and energy worrying about it.

Kim Jong-un postures, poses and misinforms. He cant afford to go to war, he would lose and would lose his power as would others in the NK admin. China wouldn't back him if push came to shove simply because it would escalate too far too quickly. In the end no-one would win. Everyone would die.

Might sound a bit pessimistic but thats real life. Species have been wiped out throughout the planet's history, no doubt we will eventually be added to the casualty list.

If you want something to worry over, worry about asteroids hitting the earth.

Faeces happens.

I watched a movie recently called Red Dawn and it was about what if North Korea attacked the United States. The film was pretty enjoyable and I think that it's as close as it's gonna get to there being a war.

There is no wealth in their country (like there was in Iraq), North Korea seems to be one of the poorest countries in the world, I don't think they can even feed their own people. So I couldn't see the US attacking them.

But I think both sides need to justify their defence budgets, so it suits both nations, this dance that makes it look like war might come.

China will stop them.

China is pretty pissed off with North Korea, and they lag decades behind South Korea technologically. The people in the North have virtually no freedom so you'd have to question how committed they'd be individually to ending the armistice agreement with the South. Having said that, their leaders are barking mad and I wouldn't put anything past them, but any major act of aggression would undoubtedly mean a bloody end for the North.

I agree, your post pretty much sums up the situation with North Korea and if they attacked South Korea they would indeed lose badly and very quickly. A lot of their rhetoric is just that ... words, when faced with the modern weaponry of South Korea or heaven forbid the US they would be reduced to a pile of smoking rubble in a very short time indeed.

My fear is that they are actually that stupid....!!!!

Nedusa 26-03-2013 06:22 AM

As a footnote to my last post... Just heard on the News that North Korea has ordered all its strategic and long range weapons to go into combat posture against the US mainland and Hawaii ...

They really don't like the US do they ??

I fear they really do want a slap from the US, but if this is just more posturing then I would have to question the sanity of the NK leaders...!!!

Iceman 26-03-2013 08:34 AM

they have a picture of them all around a computer....a supposed verry advanced computer...sky news pointed out it only has 1 wire going into it

It's not a normal country though, it's more of large cult on half an island. These are people that don't have access to outside information, and more than likely believe their plight is because of the south, and their US lead allies.

Scarlett. 26-03-2013 10:46 AM

I'm not worried, NK is running short on allies, even China is getting pissed off with them.
