George Osborne 'unaware' his car was parked in disabled bay

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-22035985

Quote:

Chancellor George Osborne did not realise a car he was travelling in was parked in a disabled bay at a motorway service station, the BBC understands.

The Daily Mirror published a photograph of the chancellor getting into a Land Rover parked in the marked bay at Magor services on the M4 near Newport.

But a Treasury source said Mr Osborne had been dropped off to buy lunch.

The unmarked police Land Rover was not driven by the chancellor at any point, added the source.

The incident is understood to have taken place on Wednesday as the chancellor returned from a speaking engagement at a nursery in Cardiff.

The Treasury source told the BBC the chancellor had got into the car and left the scene without realising that it had been parked in the bay.

Mr Osborne did not condone his driver's parking decision, the source added.

But a witness reportedly told the Mirror: "I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw his driver pull into the disabled parking bay.

"It's not as if they were in a rush to move. The car park wasn't exactly full and there were plenty of other, ordinary spaces."
"Quelle surprise!", a déclaré George ..... :amazed:

Urgh, look at his simpering smug face, it's a face you just would never tire of slapping.

George Osborne looks like a French aristo in a powdered wig

Quote:

Whenever I see George Osborne on the telly, I remember a friend’s brilliant observation that he always looks like an aristocrat in a powdered wig, peering nervously through his carriage window at the Parisian mob on the eve of the French Revolution.

Indeed, the poor man has about him a permanent air of haughty disdain for his fellow man, mixed with a touch of cruelty and a hint of fear.

I’m not suggesting for a moment that the Chancellor actually suffers from any of these character defects. In private life, for all I know, he may be as lovable, fearless and free from hauteur as the Andrex puppy.

All my friend was saying is that when the Good Lord was distributing facial features, He unkindly kitted out young George Gideon Oliver Osborne with those of a supercilious grandee of the ancien regime. He might have added that He gave him a voice to match the face — with a thin, reedy quality and a fastidious accent, suggestive of a childhood spent whining at liveried footmen.

Whatever the truth may be about the inner Gideon, as his family called him in his youth, it has long been apparent that for a politician of the 21st century, he has a bit of an image problem. Clearly, he thinks so himself, because this week, as anyone who heard his speech on welfare reform will confirm, he tried to do something about it.

Not the face, of course. There’s not much a bloke can do about that, short of plastic surgery or growing a beard. But he made a very noticeable effort to adjust the accent, attempting to bring it a notch or two down the social scale by elaborately dropping his tees and aitches and flicking in other touches of Estuary English.

‘Wod I wanna torkta you abah . . .’ he began, before getting on to his message that ‘hard-working people who wanna ge’ on in life are gonna be bedderoff’.

If you missed it, and can be bothered, you can catch the whole thing on YouTube and make up your own mind about how far he succeeded in presenting himself as a man of the people. But if you want my opinion, the experiment was not a happy one.

"Ma voiture est assis confortablement ici", dit George.

But the Driver was in the Car
so it was Not Parked and left alone.

It could have moved is someone needed it.

This is a Mirror Front Page - Pathetic

Nedusa 05-04-2013 06:38 AM

To be fair the driver parked there and stayed in the car so could have moved if required. Also George Osbourne is a Minister of the State so security is also an issue.

All in All a bit of a non story, there are far more worrying things going on in the World at the moment just look at the situation in North Korea which has the potential to escalate into WWIII....!!!!!

Neither of those points is relevant.

The Chancellor was returning from a visit to a Cardiff nursery - where he described the Welsh Government's opposition to his welfare reform as 'unbelievable' - when he was snapped at Magor Services on the M4.

The Mirror quoted Richard Hawkes, chief executive of the disability charity Scope, assaying the incident “shows how wildly out of touch the Chancellor is with disabled people in the UK”.

Witnesses told the Mirror how Mr Osborne and his entourage went for a McDonald’s as his driver sat inside the Land Rover.

NB
Last year, Mr Osborne was involved in controversy when he boarded a first class train carriage with only a second class ticket. He later paid the extra fare.

Why do you act as if they are invincible for god sake

Livia 05-04-2013 11:44 AM

It says in the title "his car". It clearly was not his car. Which makes this yet another pointless thread for the anti-government brigade to get out their pitchforks again. Rather boring...

Kizzy 05-04-2013 12:17 PM

Who are the pro government brigade?... :laugh2:
Sorry his 'publically owned chauffeur driven gas guzzling 4x4'

Whose car was it ?

Was it the driver's ?

Was it the government's ?

Are we talking ownership or association ?

When you buy and drive a car on credit, is it "your" car or does it belong to the credit company until you finish paying ?

Does George own a car ?

My head aches ..... :conf2:

Omah 05-04-2013 12:27 PM

The car park .....

http://politicalscrapbook.net/wp-con...s-disabled.jpg

Clearly a large car park immediately adjacent to McD's but only 4 disabled car parking bays and 230 others ..... :pipe:

Vicky. 05-04-2013 12:36 PM

Cant stand the guy, but quite why this was front page news I dont know

Kizzy 05-04-2013 12:41 PM

Because at the moment there is a public backlash going on against Georgie due to his bizarre comments and dubious opinions that have been in the media lately.
If you try to tar a whole section of society as worthless you better lead a damn blameless life yourself as every move you make will be scruitinized.

Vicky. 05-04-2013 01:00 PM

Oh eyah I get that..just..I dont think its worthy of front page, thats all :joker:

Much more worth of front page IMO would have been his disgusting attempt to link child benefit with the death of the Philpott children. Deciding that because of this tragic case, the welfare system needs to be looked at.

I thought one of the Philpott thread contributors would have raised that issue so I didn't ..... :idc:

Vicky. 05-04-2013 01:23 PM

Yeah, sorry for taking your thread a bit offtopic Omah :p

There isn't a "pro-government brigade". Not everything the government does is good... but not everything they do is bad. Most people can strike a balance without becoming hysterical.

You imagine that it's just the Tory cabinet that are wafted round in chauffeur-driven, petrol-guzzling 4x4s? You think all other parties take the bus or something?

the truth 05-04-2013 01:42 PM

I thought most of you lot didnt like over hyped hysterical stories? Its ok when its about a trivial incident about a conservative you dont like, but its not ok when its about a psycho on benefits? some of you lot are very selective and hypocritical

Really bad that there are ONLY 4 disabled car parking spaces

Kizzy 05-04-2013 01:51 PM

Haha, did you now omah sorry to disappoint. Maybe not as many as we think have cottoned on to the way the government have been drip feeding poison about those on benefits, this new direct approach has taken some off guard.
It is a well established tory line though to create folk devils of the poor in this country.

The Mirror revealed Mr Cameron's plan to give married couples extra tax allowance would benefit the richest 10% of the population by up to £380 a year.

Yet single mothers, widows and working mums get nothing.

Labour MP Stephen Hepburn said: "It's bad enough he wants to discriminate against single mums.

"Now he's not even prepared to debate the plans." Critics said the proposals would be like "robbing the poor to pay the rich" and would fund "ladies of leisure".

There isn't an anti- government brigade either livia, it would be hysterical to suggest there was.
I didn't suggest Osborne was the only member to have this did I?
