Why do people even go on Twitter, if you hold views like that you should only be sharing them with your nearest and dearest.... You would think people would learn not to tweet stupid stuff by now.

That doesn't make it right though. Not employing people/sacking people/forcing people into resigning for things they have said online is, more often than not, completely unfair and is just worsening the unemployment crisis. I do like though how this week the Mail will be lambasting this man and pushing him into resigning and then next week they'll be criticising the unemployed. Irony lost on them I think.

I'm not saying it makes it right Jack but someone in his position should always think very carefully before they post stuff like this online.

Its a fact of life though - fair or otherwise and someone in a responsible position such as this should have known better.

Well I can't disagree with that because it's true, but what needs to happen is we put an end to that. What people post online shouldn't have any affect on their job, whether that be if they're given one or sacked from one. I'm talking generally and within reason here of course (and no this doesn't fall outside of that), but it's not right that someone can be forced into resigning for having an opinion on this issue and it's not right that people can not be employed or be sacked for posting photos on Facebook of them getting pissed (as if Facebook is actually an accurate representation of a person anyway, lol at the thought), amongst other things.

And I hate the 'it's a fact of life' argument. It might be a way of life at the minute but it doesn't have to remain that way. We shouldn't just accept everything at face value and never question rules and laws, things don't have to remain unjust and unfair forever, but they will while ever everyone just sits back and says 'ah well that's life isn't it'...you could apply the same thing to gay people not being able to marry, shall everyone just have sat back and just accepted that fact or actually try and do something about it?

He's a copper. He should have known better. He wouldn't be allowed to say that in the press and keep his job, saying it online is covered by exactly the same libel laws, and also by his contract.

His Twitter account was anonymous though it's not like he was setting a bad example or something, just wanted a place where he could express his views

It wasn't that anonymous, was it. He is not entitled to express his views in public like that because of his job. He's old enough to have known that. If he had a burning desire to say something like that he should have found somewhere less public than Twitter.

I agree .... anyone who uses the internet to disseminate personal information or opinions has to learn to accept that someone they don't expect may come across the information or opinion and use it against them ..... anyone who doesn't is a mug ..... :pipe:

you hear 1000 times worse things said every day on the street or even on tv by comedians , yet they can say these things and yet if its tweeted its somehow worse? same with youtube, endess racism goes unnoticed, you sneeze on twitter and the world catches a cold. the mans an idiot yes, but why is twitter comments taken so out of proportion to the rest of the world?

It's easy to make an anonymous account on twitter. If he wanted to express his personal views on public matters, he should have done so without using his real name.

If you are a public figure whenever you speak in public (and twitter is public) you are also representing your position. Especially as a cop because police are not supposed to take political sides, their only side is supposed to be the law.

Maybe the things that he said were in poor taste, but in what way are a few derogatory comments about Thatcher going to affect his performance as a police officer? Do they expect that he'll be going on some sort of mad rampage and arrest people who are supporters of her?

It's just absurd. If they were really that annoyed at what he'd written then the proper course of action would have been an internal punishment given to him by his bosses, plus his deletion of the offending tweets. I think this is far too harsh.

It was silly of him, I guess he just had to speak his mind. It cost him his job yes, maybe he knew it would?

well as more about the story emerges it appears it's the DM who have shot themselves in the foot....he posted anonymously but was outed by the DM. He resigned thereby ensuring he gets his full final salary pension which the DM states would be up to 30,000 (if he was sacked he would not get his pension) and the DM are not happy oops...:joker:
