Downtown

When you're alone and life is making you lonely
You can always go - downtown.
When you've got worries all the noise and the hurry
Seems to help I know downtown.

Just listen to the music of the traffic in the city
Linger on the sidewalk where the neon signs are pretty
How can you lose?

The lights are much brighter there
you can forget all your troubles, forget all your cares
so go downtown...

Joeysteele certainly does love Ben for this Ammi, I love that song, in fact I really adore Petula's voice and just about all the songs she has recorded.
I set out a few years ago to collect all the songs she has recorded and that have been released on CD,I've have already amassed near 100 cd's of her,English,French and German.(I have a great mass of her vinyl work from my Grandmother's and Parents colecting of her records too).
She is still making great CDs,her brand new one, Lost In You, is a whole new sudio album with a more melancholy version of Downtown on it,it is like a whole new song.

Great thread to wake up to this one, Ben. I absolutely love the words to Downtown,an amazing timeless gem in the pop world and what a great 'true' star Petula is too.
Wow, what a start to the day.

Indeed Shaun, really good too, still making the charts Internationally and here in the UK.
Cut,Copy me was a hit in Belgium last year, previous to that she guested on the Saw Doctors revival of Downtown which apparantly made 2 in the Irish Charts and her new album made the top 30 here in the UK in March this year too.

Still recording, still performing, doing a UK theatre tour in October and I am really looking forward to seeing her sing the new version of Downtown at those concerts too.
All that at 80 years of age and after 70 years in show buisness of doing just about everything that is possible to do. An amazing lady, an even more amazing star.

Joey, you must have, 'Don't Sleep in the Subway Darling', another great song from Petula.

That is another fantastic song of hers Suze, in fact it is her own personal favourite of the songs Tony Hatch wrote for her.
The words are so true and also uplifting as with Downtown and so many of her great songs/hits.
Her album tracks are amazing and when she covers a song it becomes a whole new creation.

I play her music loads every day,it drives a couple of my housemates mad at times but I am slowly brainwashing them.

Oh lord, gal I got the right tactics to turn you on, and girl I...
Wanna be the Papa...You can be the Mom....oh oh!

Just been listening to all the versions of it that I have, there are 3 newly recorded versions of it by Petula her original 1964 version, still the best one, her re-make of a disco style in 1976 and now this one in 2013.
There have been 3 re-makes using Petula's orginal vocal track but to a new sound, Downtown 88,which made the top 10 again, another re-make in 1999 and an Australian re-make in 2003.

The other singers I have with their versions are Frank Sinatra's,(he murders it), Marianne Faithfull, did a fair version.
Sandie Shaw which for me doesn't work with her voice really.

Probably the best one in my view, a long way behind Petula's though is Dolly Parton's a good bash at it to be fair by her.
Finally Emma Bunton, who at least didn't spoil it.

Great song.
Ben you have made my day with this. I think though I have driven my housemates crazy,in fact 2 of them have gone out.

Still going strong

joeysteele 28-04-2013 09:54 PM

That song made the top 30 in Belgium Zee it is on her new album 'Lost In You'. Amazing song really and her voice sounds nothing at all like an 80 year old.

Cut, Copy Me is for me one of the very best songs recorded by her.

You mean... :suspect:
