A police officer in New York had to be rescued by firefighters after getting stuck up a tree trying to reach a cat.

Dane Natto found himself stranded 30 feet above the ground after responding to 911 calls made by concerned citizens who spotted a feline up high in Oakland Gardens, Queens.

The cat climbed further up each time Natto got near, reports the New York Post.

Witness Luna Giuong said: "We looked out the window and we saw the cop [on] the tree, sitting. [His] partner was laughing at him."

Natto's partner eventually called the local fire department to help out.

Giuong added that there was banter when the firefighters arrived.

"They didn't go straight to helping him," she added. "They all gathered around and laughed at him.

"They took their time just crowding around. It seemed the officer was enjoying himself."

Both Natto and the cat were helped down safely.
