Canon Gordon Rideout, 74, of Polegate, East Sussex, was convicted at Lewes Crown Court of 34 indecent assaults and two attempted rapes.

The attacks between 1962 and 1973 mostly took place at Ifield Hall children's home in Crawley, where he was an assistant curate.

Some offences happened when he was a padre at Middle Wallop military base.

Rideout had denied the charges, which involved 16 different children.

Canon Gordon Rideout charged with sexual offences

Canon Gordon Rideout Canon Gordon Rideout was arrested in March following a nine-month investigation (so presumably the investigation started in June 2011)

A total of 36 of the 38 alleged offences are of indecent assault on girls and boys in their early teens, Sussex Police said.

Of those, 31 are alleged to have been committed at a property in Crawley, West Sussex, and one in Barkingside, east London, between 1962 and 1968.

A further four indecent assaults are alleged to have taken place in Middle Wallop, Hampshire, between 1971 and 1973.

The other two allegations are of attempted unlawful sexual intercourse with a girl in Crawley between 1962 and 1966.

A retired Anglican priest accused of 37 sex attacks against children used to wander a children's home unaccompanied and visit the dormitories, Lewes Crown Court has heard.

Prosecuting, Philip Bennetts QC said: "It would appear from the evidence that he would wander the house and indeed the grounds unaccompanied, and he would visit children when they were sick and alone in bed."

Mr Bennetts said: "One of the questions that inevitably is asked in cases of this nature, when you're going back such a long time in the past, is why complaints weren't made at the time.

"You will hear in the evidence in this case that a child's word was not believed.

"Indeed, on the occasion that a young child was brave enough to complain, you'll hear that they were beaten."

Some of the children were as young as FIVE, jurors were told.

He is also accused of twice attempting to rape a teenage girl who attended choir practice.

Jurors have been told Canon Rideout was acquitted by a court martial in 1972 over claims of indecent assault.
The assaults pertain to the same era, though ..... and like Savile, he must have committed many more offences than have been recorded .....
