What life on Earth would look like if it had rings like Saturn

Every so often when the Moon is especially ginormous or we can see Venus or Mars from Earth, humans collectively freak out. So cool three-exclamation-points, we scream. Look how big with thirty i’s, we yell. And it’s warranted! Seeing things that don’t belong in the sky pop up, well, in the sky is fun. So could you imagine if one day Earth developed rings like Saturn? It would be insane.

Amazing science and space artist Ron Miller imagined what life on Earth would look like if it had rings like Saturn and it’s mind blowing. The coolest thing is that different areas of the world would see Earth’s rings differently — a streak of light dividing the sky at the Equator, a bending ring that looks brightens the Moon in Guatamela, a permanent rainbow on the east coast of the United States and so forth. I want to live on this make believe planet now. Earth is too ordinary.

In Polynesia, Earth would cast a shadow on the rings creating a warped ring.

Near the equator, the rings would be a streaking light splitting the sky.

Probably the most beautiful looking view of the ring would be in Guatemala.

Wow I never thought about the rings just being and looking like a line while at the equator.

This is absolutely gorgeous. We should blow up the moon or something to create such a ring system.

Amazing! Love stuff like this. I've always wondered if our planet was just one of Saturn's moon's like "Titan" and you saw Saturn in the sky all the time. Now that would be a sight!!

Someone did this mock up I remember a while back (obviously it would make no scientific sense if it was real and we wouldn't be here)

space genuinely scares me. we're all so inconsequential :/

Honestly Karl you wouldn't want to lol. It's so uninhabitable that any human being would be torn to pieces by its enormous wind storms.

Paul1912 24-05-2013 11:25 PM

Oh and you'd suffocate with lack of oxygen. Pretty grim I know lol

Shaun 24-05-2013 11:26 PM

stupid karl.

looooove seeing things like this

I'm a total planet and space nerd

If Earth had rings than spanned as far out as Saturn's, they would reach about three quarters of the way to the Moon.

Wow! Such a pity though, Earth itself with those would look stunning.

First impressions I thought wow, that would be so cool, then I thought it would be scary to see something like this. Then I thought if we hadn't seen the moon, like ever, would that scare me on first viewing. If these rings were always there I wouldn't be scared right? Then I stopped thinking and focused on something else...

Mystic Mock 25-05-2013 06:30 PM

That looks awesome, I would want to go to Guatemala if their view would be really like that.
