People who have had their appendix out (help)

I have suspected appendicitis and am just waiting for a spare bed before going into hospital.

I have Skyes christening on Sunday.

Am I likely to be out in time for it? I would have thought so as apparently they do keyhole surgery which sounds like you would be pretty much in and out. But I mentioned to the doctor I saw today about the christening and he said I may have to cancel :bored:

How long were you, or people you know, in hospital after getting yours/theirs out?

AnnieK 29-05-2013 11:47 AM

My best friend was out in 48 hours I think Vicky but she was pretty sore for a few days...I think you would probably be ok for Sunday but would have to sit down through it....as you may struggle holding Skye whilst you're stood up just through soreness..

I still have mine, but i've been with plenty of guys that have the tell tale scar. From what I understand it's a fairly common surgery. Nothing to worry about. I think scars are sexy.

Removal of the appendix (which doctors might call an appendectomy) is one of the most commonly performed operations in the UK, and its success rate is excellent.

It's not always easy to make a clear diagnosis. But if there's an outside chance that you have appendicitis, doctors tend to advise surgery rather than run the risk of the appendix bursting.

Keyhole surgery

A keyhole operation (medically known as laparoscopy) is usually carried out as the recovery is quicker compared to an open operation.

Three small cuts are made to remove the appendix. The advantage of keyhole surgery is that scarring is minimal and the recovery time is fast.

Most people can leave hospital a few days after the operation, although it may be one or two weeks before you fully recover.
I had my appendix taken out as part of major abdominal surgery, so that was different, but I had keyhole surgery for a double hernia - that was an overnight stay after surgery then home - the advice was to "rest", i.e. nothing strenuous, but keep moving for a couple of weeks thereafter.

Cheers for that omah. I would have googled it myself but whenever I google medical stuff I freak myself out by reading the horror stories and always convince myself that I am going to die

So they are definitely likely to do it in that case...doc reckons its that from where the pain is (though I dont have a temperature or feel sick) and said hospital would check me over too. But it sounds like once they think it might be appendicitis..the appendix is out :S

Cherie 29-05-2013 12:32 PM

Oh, hopefully a misdiagnosis :bawling: Take care Vicky.

Vicky. 29-05-2013 12:46 PM

From reading what omah posted..even if it was a misdiagnosis..it seems they may operate anyway. As even the slightest chance of it being appendicitis is acted upon

I guess though, at least I will know I wont have problems with it in the future. About 1/10 people get it at some point in their lives apparently.

Its just very very bad timing. I wouldnt usually care about having an op.

If you had to cancel the christening, would that be awful, have you people travelling to it? or would it take ages to rearrange? Just think in some ways you could do without the extra stress if they do operate, and you want to enjoy the day and not feel sore and stuff.

Nah we dont have people travelling too far. Would just be a pain in the arse to plan it all again. Can be done if needed..but I would rather spend the day in pain than fanny about redoing everything

Yeah probably best to have it out anyway even if you don't have appendicitis, one of my friends had his burst and he said it was the most unbearable pain he'd ever felt.. hope that helps :)

Vicky. 29-05-2013 05:15 PM

Just think of the sympathy you can expect when you're released ..... ;)

Do NOT be heroic - a little whimper every once in a while works wonders ..... :laugh2:
