The rules of Monopoly

According to this article most people have been playing Monopoly wrong for most of their lives:

Quote:

Monopoly rules demand that when players land on a space, such as Park Lane, but do not choose to purchase the property, an auction must take place.

The idea is that a bidding war will prompt another player to buy the space, and so the game will speed up.

However, many players usually skip this stage in ignorance and restart play, meaning the Park Lane property will be available until someone lands on it again – which could be hours later.

This seems like an incredible revelation, a lot of the smug DM readers on there are bragging about how they've always played it like this but I've payed Monopoly with quite a lot of different people in my time and never played it this way, even though this seems like a brilliant rule which makes complete sense to stop the game dragging on for hours and hours. Did anyone else not realise this :suspect:

Ohhhhhhhhh I never knew that rule existed, this could have changed everything. The thing I disliked about Monopoly is how it went on forever

AnnieK 30-05-2013 10:16 AM

I never knew that either... I don't think I've ever finished a game of Monopoly...this may make it more interesting though...

Terrible rule. The wrong way is much better.

Brother Leon 30-05-2013 10:18 AM

Yeah. I buy half my property like that. My luck with dice is terrible.

Rubbish, the bidding auctions would probably be the most entertaining bit of the game

Locke. 30-05-2013 10:21 AM

You must be smart and patient like myself, wasting all your money on silly auctions will get you nowhere.

GiRTh 30-05-2013 10:22 AM

That's an online rule. I've never played that way on the actual board.

Marc 30-05-2013 10:29 AM

I knew this rule existed thanks to the iPhone app.

I understand that it is difficult to have everything you've ever believed in questioned and ripped to shreds, but that is the official rule I'm afraid Girth

Has anyone ever completed a game of monopoly? It always descends into chaos after about an hour and a half.

You're right.

I object to these new rules of Monopoly even though the old rules were wrong. Back in my day, you did what you wanted and no one questioned it. These immigrants/feminists/homosexuals/muslims/do gooders/political correctness brigade. Societies going down the toilet. :spin:

Absolutely, my sons friend told me his Mum threw the board at him once, I know how she feels... we play using the auction thing, I think when we got the new game with the credit cards rather than the paper money we re-read the rules.- feels smug- for knowing the rules and having the credit card version.

swinearefine 30-05-2013 10:47 AM

:suspect: I've always played the auction-way

I've thrown the board before  I hate cheats and it ruins the whole game for me, will have a go with these new rules.

Josy 30-05-2013 11:26 AM

Monopoly is a **** game anyway, just play screwball scramble or frustration or something.

MTVN 30-05-2013 11:28 AM

Most people stop playing those games when they're about 5 Josy

Locke. 30-05-2013 11:31 AM

Haven't even heard of those games. Must be Scottish.

This. And it's so goddam irritating because everybody starts bickering for about 15 minutes over the bidding.

LemonJam 30-05-2013 12:28 PM

I've always played it like this
