1984 play
I was just wondering if anyone has heard of or seen the George Orwell play 1984. It is the idea of actual Big Brother, in which the show got its inspiration from. Im going to see it tomorrow. My mum has read the book and rates it, anybody else got any info on it?:spin:

I am actually reading that book at the minute
I find it very uncomfortable and never read it in bed cos I just couldn't get to sleep |
I have read the book and seen the film. I found the book very oppressive and there was one part that really made me sit up and think. All I will say (because you are going to see the play ) is that the part where he realises that Big Brother is actually watching Him in his room, made me feel very uncomfortable.
The film was good, John Hurt and Richard Burton were in it. I saw it many years ago. I hope you enjoy the play. Where is it being performed? As you know I live in Plymouth and havn't seen it advertised. |
Yes, it's bloody depressing stuff!
Did it at school, read it since, seen film (made circa 1984) Essentially about a hapless guy called Winston, one man against an all seeing all manipulating state (Totalitarian) as embodied by 'Big Brother' whose Stalinesque portrait overlooks and oversees all with the slogan: BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU http://images.google.com/images?q=tb...bigbrother.jpg The idea of Room 101, the programme with Paul Merton comes from 1984 as well. A summary the story can be found HERE THOUGHT PROVOKING STUFF! I think a lot will depend on the production. It could be excellent! |
I remember reading the book for English Literature at school, my that was heavy stuff. I think Grease would be much lighter, especially the summer lovin song.:dazzler::elephant::dazzler:

Read the book.
Seen the play [many years ago at Nottingham Playhouse I think] Seen the film. As Rob says it could be excellent or not depending on the production. I seem to remember the version I saw was NOT that brilliant. All though provoking and depressing. The end of the film stuck in my memory though. All the characters wandering around in woodland reciting, having taken on a book to learn and keep for for posterity. Hmmm ! |
Well, I just went to watch it.
I appreciated the brilliant acting and the unusual plot but I did not get it at all! My friends thought I was solid for not getting it but it was really complicated and because I knew nothing about it before and hadnt studied it, it was really hard to take in. But if you understand the plot, I would recommend people to go and see it because the quality of acting was superb. |
