You could see he wasn't actually that bothered. It's all part of his game playing.

he was bothered Caudle, i could see that. he's just good at covering it up. he's used to being unpopular and disliked, that's why he deals with it well.

He fancies Hazel like mad. It is not reciprocated in the slightest.

That's what he's actually gutted about. ;)
