You do realise, that's still only about 20 people? Sam winning is hardly in the face of overwhelming odds?

This isn't some human story of triumph in the face of adversity. HM's like Sam will always do well because they appeal to a large portion of the voting public, but go on to niche bb forums, and he'll be less popular.

You can't support a massive favourite, then pretend you've been supporting the plucky underdog.
