Sophie and recovery rants

Sophie is pee'ing me off. Going on about "4 years in recovery" and the papers saying "she fears relapse". Thing is, she ain't even clean. She drinks wine in the house. That's as much of a drug that coke etc.

MTVN 27-08-2013 09:30 AM

But she's clean of her coke addiction which is what she was in rehab for, she also smokes and drinks coffee but that doesn't mean she still has drug problems

dave_jee 27-08-2013 09:40 AM

nahh,, to be "in recovery" you dont drink. I know people that have stopped "drugs they had a problem with" then turned to drink which killed em, if alcohol was invented today it would never be legal.
Even recovery literature states alcohol is a drug. Just because you stop "the drug you have a problem with" and use other mind altering substances does not make you clean. She ain't in recovery.

dave_jee 27-08-2013 09:44 AM

From NA "How It Works"

"The only way to keep from returning to active addiction is not to take that first drug. If you are like us you know that one is too many and a thousand never enough. We put great emphasis on this, for we know that when we use drugs in any form, or substitute one for another, we release our addiction all over again.

Thinking of alcohol as different from other drugs has caused a great many addicts to relapse. Before we came to NA, many of us viewed alcohol separately, but we cannot afford to be confused about this. Alcohol is a drug. We are people with the disease of addiction who must abstain from all drugs in order to recover."

Maybe I am ranting now :p

Kizzy 27-08-2013 09:44 AM

Of course you can still drink if you are an ex coke addict that wasn't your addiction was it?
I agree that if you have an addictive personality you are more likely to develop a dependence but I wouldn't say it was a given...

dave_jee 27-08-2013 09:52 AM

If she is drinking she isnt "in recovery for 4 years" she still uses
Is she cured now?

How hard was it to beat drugs for good?
Ben Harper, Birmingham

I've now realised that drugs weren't my main problem. I am actually an alcoholic first and foremost. But it has been tough, especially when I was still surrounded by people who did drugs. A drug addict does not want to see the person next to them clean up their act. It's also taken a lot to build up my confidence and learn to be able to go out without that extra help. I wouldn't know about harder drugs like heroin - I never did that. But for me, it was a question of putting my mind to it. A craving only lasts for 15 seconds so you've just got to get through it.

Do people forfeit their right to privacy when they become famous?
Ruby Dwyer, by e-mail

I didn't try to become famous; I just happened to end up that way. I do think the press goes too far. I got quite angry a couple of weeks ago because I had to drive around for half an hour to lose the paparazzi when I was going to an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting. It's important that I protect the other people who are there. But I think I have definitely forfeited my right to privacy now because I'm just about to appear in a fly-on-the-wall documentary, in which my boyfriend and I will be filmed 24 hours a day. I accept that. The difference is that now I have nothing to hide.

Livia 27-08-2013 09:58 AM

Sophie is an annoying, reckless drunk. If she can't handle it why does she drink? Because she has an addictive personality. I can never understand when someone fights so hard to come off drugs and still drinks to excess.

Kizzy 27-08-2013 10:01 AM

It doesn't work the other way though... Ex alcoholics don't start taking drugs.

dave_jee 27-08-2013 10:06 AM

"Alcoholism" is the old fashioned word for addiction, people think alcohol is their problem but it's just a symptom. I was "sober" for approx 8 years and thought I could use drugs which I had never bothered with in the past,, I ended up in the same place I did with drink,, same addiction just using a different drug. I am 6 years (proper) clean now.
When people separate drink and drugs it baffles me,, the only real difference is law. Addiction doesn't care about laws :-\

Kizzy 27-08-2013 10:09 AM

I'm an ex alcoholic and I wouldn't dream of taking drugs.
I care very much about laws.

Livia 27-08-2013 10:10 AM

Great post Dave Jee, and good for you.

I didnt mean the people dont care about laws, I am on about addiction/alcoholism (same thing) not caring about legality.

What I'm saying is I do care about the legality...
That's the difference I was addicted to alcohol and could walk into a shop and buy it. I know there are other things available that are illegal and that is what stops me.
I was addicted to cigarettes too for a long time, addictions can be beaten and not just exchanged one for another but it takes a lot of courage and strength.
Well done to you for beating yours, I owe a lot of my recovery to neuro linguistic programming (NLP)

Cool,I have never been involved with NLP but it sounds like it works :)
One other point is,, I "never had a problem with "drugs"" until I tried them. There are some drugs I didn't have a problem with, but only because I never tried em.
For me, addiction is mostly about (trying to) control/managing feelings. OCD is the new word for addiction. People performing rituals/actions in an attempt to control anxiety and (mainly irrational) fear.

Pincho Paxton 27-08-2013 10:45 AM

I don't think that Coke, and Wine are related in any way. You can get off drugs, and drink wine.

The problem with the druggie is that they are more likely to try them in the first place. I know that I can get addicted to Coke, so I have never tried it.

Kizzy 27-08-2013 10:54 AM

I didn't set out with the intention of becoming addicted it crept up on me over a period of years. I have to say with this statement '' I never had a problem with "drugs"" until I tried them'' in a way it seems you were actively seeking out a new addiction.
If you already knew you had this predisposition then why risk it with a substance that is renowned for being highly addictive?
I agree with the rituals to control anxiety part as I looked on my anxiety as a bad habit, then changed my behaviour in order to break the links to the chain to brake the habit before I dealt with the cravings.

Arent you talking about Carol? Annoying yes, reckless yes, legless the other night yes, drunk yes. Sophie is free of drugs and that in itself took a long time and alot of rehab. If she wants to drink and smoke she shouldnt be slated for doing so. Her main problem was always drugs. Sophie has been a bit drunk yes but she hasnt had to be carried by two youngsters to her bed and been unable to take her jeans off!!!!!

This is a thread about Sophie. It says so at the top.

When Sophie drinks she lets her gob run away with her and she becomes annoying and overbearing. That doesn't mean that I think Carol is any better... only this isn't a Carol thread.

Kizzy 27-08-2013 12:23 PM

''When Sophie drinks she lets her gob run away with her and she becomes annoying and overbearing.''

As do a lot of people, I actually feel she is trying to be nice all her advice comes from a good place.
Carol turning other housemates against her due to jealousy and insecurity is not very nice.

Pincho Paxton 27-08-2013 03:28 PM

Funny, but I have a knack of talking science before something is discovered. I said that I would not try Coke, because trying it is the part that gets you addicted. Well science posted this just after I said it...

meh, what about shopping and gambling etc?

reece(: 01-09-2013 01:12 AM

Drunken Carol is far worse than Sophie, I actually think Sophie is better drunk than sober.

Nemo123 01-09-2013 02:02 AM

In the 21st century, what would be a better drug than alcohol, more benign and with less nasty side effects?
