Question for parents and/or medical professionals - need advice for an oil burn.

I've just burnt myself with hot oil on my left forearm. I basically slipped with sausages in a baking try and it pured down my arm in probably a 3" square. It ******ing kills and is blistering up already. I also have a tennis ball sized burn on my foot from the spillage

Because it was oil, do I have to clean it before I put cream on it, because it's too painful to clean. I only have Savlon to put on it, so is that going to do the trick, or do I need something else?

Niamh. 29-08-2013 03:23 PM

Jeez, that sounds pretty bad, maybe you need to have it seen to?

Kate! 29-08-2013 03:24 PM

you need to go to A and E straightaway.

Erm, A&E job that

Niamh. 29-08-2013 03:24 PM

Yeah, from the sounds of it, I think you should go to A&E or your doctor

Vanessa 29-08-2013 03:24 PM

I think it's better you get it checked.

Go to the hospital. D:

Ammi 29-08-2013 03:24 PM

..ice, frozen veg etc..anything cold as it will continue to burn for quite a while..?...

MTVN 29-08-2013 03:25 PM

Just run it under a cold tap, should do the trick

Jesus. 29-08-2013 03:25 PM

A&E? Seems like a lot of trouble for a burn. Can't I just put some cream on it and let it heal?

Ammi 29-08-2013 03:26 PM

..I've just read you OP properly..doen't put cream or anything on it..cold water or something from the freezer to stop the burning process...and leave it on there for around half an hour..can someone take you to A&E..?..

..no cream seriously, with an oil burn it will carry on burning so you must get something cold on it...

yep echo this, cool water, not ice cold though is recommended in my first aid kit, put a tea towel round as a compress and go and get checked out.

This is exactly the kind of thing they are there for. Is NHS Direct still running? Ring them. Pretty sure they will just tell you to go to A&E though.

It could get infected. It needs seeing to.

I've got peas on at the moment. I'll post a pic in a few mins to show you. I don't think a&e is an option, as I can't be sitting in a waiting room four hours.

Matthews advice was basically what I wanted to hear.

Josy 29-08-2013 03:30 PM

A&E

You will be high priority for burns, they wont leave you sitting around.

Why don't you ring nhs direct? They could tell you if you need to go to a&e or not.

MTVN 29-08-2013 03:32 PM

Or just ring that useless new non emergency 111 number

Cherie 29-08-2013 03:32 PM

Cream is the worst thing you can put on a burn. A cold compress or keep you arm under a cold tap, and take some paracetamol for the pain.

Verbal 29-08-2013 03:33 PM

Am I invisible? It. Could. Get. Infected. ****ing peas.

..ughh, I despair of you..you need to go to A&E seruiously, it could get infected and become much more of a problem, then you won't have any choice of an inconvenient day...just go please...now..!!!
