Tommy Robinson (EDL leader) refused service at Selfridges

Well his friend technically, but being with him was why he didn't get served:

A shop assistant who refused to serve a man buying clothes with English Defence League leader Tommy Robinson is facing the sack.

Robinson, a convicted criminal who leads often violent anti-Islam protests, claimed the luxury London department store assistant asked his friend if he was with the EDL leader and then said “******* off, I am not serving you”.

According to his own camera phone recording, Robinson said: “You won’t serve my friend because he’s friends with me ... and I’m in the EDL.”

Robinson said he had not heard them talking but immediately challenged the Selfridges assistant who he assumed was a Muslim “because he had Mo on his name tag”.

The man held his hands up and tried to ignore the question, but eventually replied: “You can put me on the camera all you like but I ain’t serving you”, before walking away.

Selfridges said it was “very disappointed” about the incident, which happened yesterday, and suspended the staff member pending an internal investigation.

They also laid on a three-course meal for Robinson and his friend in their Hix restaurant, champagne and caviar bar, including £25 portions of char-grilled sirloin steak and chips, and chocolate cake and ice-cream.

Their spokesman said: “We pride ourselves on making everyone welcome and endeavour to provide world-class customer service at all times.

“We are taking the matter very seriously and are currently investigating it.”

The worker is being represented by his union, USDAW.

Robinson said his friend was not associated with the EDL.

Seems to have sparked quite a bit of debate, some people say it's not the shop workers place to pick and choose who he serves because it's not for him to determine Selfridge's policy, but the shop's been criticised a lot too for giving him a free slap up lunch and potentially sacking the guy over it

So yes, thoughts? Feel a bit on the fence about this

(also think this happened a couple of days ago but not seen it talked about anywhere)

You can't refuse to do your job because you don' t like your 'customers' politics. Where will it end?

Paramedics refusing to treat a heart attack victim because his Uncle is a white supremacist?

If you're being paid to do a job then you have to do it, regardless. The Assistant is out of order.

Selfridges or any other place of business is not a place to air your views.

A jobs a job. You can't do it, leave.

You don't chose to do a job that involves serving people if you can't serve every person. There were so many that I hated when I worked in hospitality but you just have to do it. Certainly wouldn't have told them to f off

If I refused to cooperate with everyone at work I dislike, I'd spend my days alone. As much as I dislike this bloke, he shouldn't have been refused service.

Though he is probably out of a job now, must have been very satisfying :D:

Oh and no I don't understand why Selfridges felt the need for the slap up meal, when a similar thing happened in Sainburys over a customer on their mobile, they got a voucher, the same would have sufficed here.

He could have tactfully got another member of staff to serve them if he felt it went against his personal principles to serve the guy?
It's a shame they got publicity from this.

I am sure if Tommy Robinson was offered a voucher he would have made more of a meal of it than his steak and chips. And Selfridges do gift cards. Always nice to receive one.

Disgusting customer service, he should have been sacked on the spot.
