Isn't it strange about 9/11...

That despite it being such a catastrophic, life changing event which truly shocked the world... the media has never really focused on the people who hijacked the planes? I have no idea what those peoples' names are. Isn't that bizarre? Every year there is anniversary footage, anniversary documentaries etc... but the names of the people who committed such a heinous crime haven't been made forever infamous? Just struck me as odd, always has done.

Kizzy 05-11-2013 11:21 PM

Well there are 101 conspiracy theories, but it's undemocratic to discuss them so we best not.

fingers 05-11-2013 11:25 PM

Actually they have all been named and their backgrounds explored, but they have such forgettable names that they are now consigned to the Dustbin of History, who will even remember ONE of them in 5 years time?

King Gizzard 05-11-2013 11:27 PM

Probably because they don't want to focus on it/give the cause airtime, and would rather concentrate on the lives that are lost/giving tributes to them I guess.

and yeah, the names are generally not memorable

Amy Jade 05-11-2013 11:27 PM

I'm kind of glad I don't remember their names, they would probably love that

GypsyGoth 05-11-2013 11:28 PM

15 were from Saudi Arabia. the other 4 were from Egypt, Lebanon, and the UAE.

They already had a far more charismatic villainous archetype waiting in the wings in the form of Bin Laden who could take all the media heat. The news wanted nothing to do with the more ordinary looking little brown people with weird names.

No doubt they are all cavorting with their respective 40 or is it 70 Virgins?

Atta looks cold as ice. The rest of them seem relatively cuddly.

I was going to say something really inappropriate about him and then remembered who he was and what we're discussing

Because their motives weren't exactly mysterious. It's not like it came out of the blue. remember 9/11 was the SECOND attack on the WTC. The first one in 1993 by the same group.

Everyone already understands exactly why they did it and how they did it. They were just pawns in a much larger organization. So they as individuals are not really very interesting.

It's like asking why there isn't more interest in every husband that kills his wife. We already know why they do it, we understand that some men are just controlling jealous abusive assholes. It's really not interesting at all. The victims are far more interesting and the victims rightfully get more attention.

You're right, I just find it curious that these men aren't reviled in the same way that the likes of Al-Megrahi is, or people who infamously assassinated popular figures, like Sirhan Sirhan or Mark Chapman, for example.

GypsyGoth 05-11-2013 11:41 PM

It could be because they committed suicide during it, so in a way they were only weapons.

Jack_ 05-11-2013 11:42 PM

The only one I know is Mohamed Atta and that's because we learnt about his suicide note recently

fingers 05-11-2013 11:42 PM

Also there are way too many to be bothered with!

Yeah, I remember Mohamed Atta as well, but I'll have forgotten him by tomorrow, again!

lostalex 05-11-2013 11:45 PM

Most people don't remember the names of everyone of the killers in the Manson family, but we all remember Charles Manson.

Al Queada is just OBL's Manson family.

19 methinks!

Ninastar 05-11-2013 11:55 PM

Whatever. There was a lot of them

lostalex 06-11-2013 12:00 AM

19 is an odd number. surely there was meant to be 20, have they found the 20th hijacker?

also interesting that the 3 "successful" flights all had 5, Flight 93 only had 4, would Flight 93 have been successful too if the 20th hijacker was there?

"invaded" is a bit harsh, i think the preferred term is "liberated". :wavey:
