Do you avoid walking on 3 drains and salute a magpie?

I'm not superstitious, but I have to admit I always salute magpies and say "Morning Captain". I have no idea why.

jackc1806 07-11-2013 09:18 PM

I salute magpies although like Livia i'm not really superstitious. Apart from ladders.

I salute and say "Good morning/afternoon Mr. Magpie" if I see a solitary one.

Avoid odd drains. Don't give a **** about the magpies

Nope, only the magpies and three drains. I suppose ladders too but that is more for fear of knocking it while going under.

What does it say back?

Livia 07-11-2013 09:22 PM

What about the drains? Is it in case you fall down them, or they give way? I've never thought about it before.

Josy 07-11-2013 09:24 PM

No.

I have no idea. Two drains I have no issue with but ever since I was a kid three drains have driven fear into me. Honestly I'll be walking through the city and then all of a sudden become a **** and jerk to the side of the pavement last second to avoid them or do the awkward little hop jump over them to the horror of every stranger around me.

Ninastar 07-11-2013 09:27 PM

we saw like 7 magpies in a tree once. we thought the nursery was going to explode or something

smudgie 07-11-2013 10:03 PM

We have 5 magpies that vsit daily they fly onto the roof opposite and on the tree in our front garden, I admit that when one turns up on it's own I ask it where is mates are..in my head of course, they normally land shortly after.

What am I on about. I make sure I step one foot on each drain cover. You've all benefited from this useful piece of information.

Niamh. 08-11-2013 09:08 AM

Nope never not even slightly superstitious, although i generally don't walk under ladders but that's more of a health and safety issue

I don't walk over three drains. Done it for as long as I remember.

Natalie. 08-11-2013 09:32 AM

I haven't heard of the magpie and drains thing but I don't walk under ladders or umbrellas over heads indoors

AnnieK 08-11-2013 09:33 AM

I've never heard of the three drains thing. Although now I have it will haunt me forever.

I am terrible though where magpies are concerned, I always salute, touch black then white and say Good morning/afternoon, how's your family! I have been known to almost crash my car looking for 2 if I see a single one.

I also don't like to split round lamposts - if I'm walking down the street with someone and a lampost or sign is on the pavement I have to walk on the same side as the other person - I can't do one on either side of it.

Jesus. 08-11-2013 09:37 AM

Of course not, for the same reason I don't sacrifice goats or bury young children in the foundations of new buildings - it's pointless.
