On benefits and proud.

Is anyone watching?

I'm not one of those that loves to have a good rant about how my taxes pay for people's lifestyle but the people on the show take the piss. 11 kids? Having a go at your child getting a job because you get more on benefits?

I don't mind genuine cases like if someone has mental health, or whatever, or those that genuinely look but can't find but those other ones. :cloud:

AnnieK 15-11-2013 09:04 PM

I've just watched it too....the woman with 11 kids was better than the girls in London who spent all their time shopping and getting their nails done

Not too impressed..cheeky beggars.

Sensationalism, they just find the extremes, which is about 0.0000001% of the population and they make it out to be some sort of epidemic

They are getting paid to say most of the stuff they say. Half of it probably isn't even real

Verbal 15-11-2013 09:08 PM

Hate these type of shows demonizes people. Tory propaganda.

You believe that? Where are you getting that "0.000001%" figure from?

Yeah but why have 11 kids?

And the big woman did talk about the fact that if she found a real job she would not be able to have £500 left after bills... so why bother make proper effort to find a job.

I didn't watch it, so can't comment. As Nathan said, they focus on a very, very small majority of people in a show that is broadcast to millions of people, who then in turn tar everyone on benefits with the same brush.

Verbal 15-11-2013 09:15 PM

benefit fraud represents 2% of the estimated total annual fraud in the UK.

Kizzy 15-11-2013 09:21 PM

It perpetuates a myth, MP Rachel Reeves suggested to me that if you see programmes like this as political bias to report them... So I did.

I don't doubt that it's a small percentage that commit benefit fraud, but the fact is that there are some that do. They ruin it for those that genuinely do need benefits, and also it gives impression to foreigners that they can just come to Britain and claim benefits easily and do nothing else, which some do because there was an article the other day about (not sure it was romanians anymore) Eastern Europeans who say " we want to live in Britain to claim benefits".

It's a shame those ones are ruining it for the people it is intended for. I do believe some tax payers act to high and mighty and I think to myself bitch if you lost your job tomorrow where you gonna be the next day, JSA queue innit?

So i'm not a hardcore benefit hater, just damn, don't abuse it.

You are always going to get people who cheat the system, no matter what you do. Its just the way humans work. Focusing the nations attention on a very small percentage of people who in the big scheme of things do little more than cheat the system out of a few quid, lets the real big time fraudsters who cheat the country out of millions of pounds on a daily basis get away with it.

Where are the programs focusing on the bankers or the energy companies who are willfully going to let pensioners freeze over this winter for the sake of their profit margin? These people are government approved!

Open your eyes

Its pure propaganda

Why do people even waste precious time watching this garbage.

Well..the daily mail (whos figures will be exaggerated if anything) reckon only 40 families have 11 kids. 30 of these families are on income support too..which means they may well be in work. The other 10 are on disability benefits

There are millions of people on benefits. So the 0.0001% or whatever seems about right

You're right, benefit fraudsters are not the biggest fraudsters I won't argue with that.

I dont actually get this at all. If working (assuming on minimum wage) she would still get all the child benefits, still get housing benefit(possibly a bit less than she gets now though, but would be covered by wage/WTC) and also get working tax credit.

All she would lose would be her income support/JSA. And that would be supplemented by her wages. She would be better off by working. As is everyone..besides disabled people who rightly get more benefits than others..

I'm getting less angry again. You're all right, those programs are designed to exaggerate and to infuriate the money hungry (not that i'm money hungry) thinking I work 40 hours a week, lose £100-200 so you can spend time at the nail sop all day and then go home and watch sky with your iceland chips and sausages comfortable placed on your knees, nah mate.
Exaggerating a stereotype basically.

She was obviously misinformed then or just genuinely does not want to work. It's so easy to get used to doing nothing.

I imagine if you have 500 pw after paying rent, the thought of an extra 150 or so isnt as appealing as it is to other people :/
