In their strongest statement yet on this issue, scientists say acidification could increase by 170% by 2100.

They say that some 30% of ocean species are unlikely to survive in these conditions.

The researchers conclude that human emissions of CO2 are clearly to blame.

The study will be presented at global climate talks in Poland next week.

In 2012, over 500 of the world's leading experts on ocean acidification gathered in California. Led by the International Biosphere-Geosphere Programme, a review of the state of the science has now been published.

This Summary for Policymakers states with "very high confidence" that increasing acidification is caused by human activities which are adding 24 million tonnes of CO2 to oceans every day.

Sounds like the perfect excuse for the British Government to slap an additional £50 on to the APD thus stopping everyone from flying and leading to the demise of most airlines using U.K airports.

I've never understood why certain countries pour so much money into space exploration when we've not got much of a clue about what goes on under the sea. Sometimes I think it comes down to the really basic principle of assuming down = hell and up = heaven and that's why the world at large is obsessed with exploring space.

I like that we explore space... but one thing shouldn't exclude the other. There's so much money sloshing around in the world, there are people paying £10,000 for a handbag and at the same time people dying for the lack of clean drinking water. Seriously... I wonder sometimes how we've made it this far.

It just amazes me that in 2013 scientists are only just figuring out that sonar causes marine life to commit suicide and that fascinating creatures like the mimic octopus were only discovered in the early 1990s and it was thought they only inhabited Indonesian waters until 2012 when they found one off the Great Barrier Reef - yet the space race was in the 1960s. Why aren't we more focused on water on Earth rather than figuring out if there's water on Mars? Mad...
