Me too Cherie....although these things are usually only vile to non and ex smokers. When I was a smoker, I would never look at these types of articles (or think that it would happen to me)

Good point! I think if you are an older smoker then you probably think it's too late to give up and the newer smokers think they are invincible as you say.

I have a question for smokers/ex-smokers... what made you start? I'm not a smoker, just always wondered why smokers start because after a while almost every smoker I know has then started saying "I wish I'd never started, I'm going to quit" or "I'm trying to quit"...

I started to 'experiment', see how it was like and all that. Plus I didn't fancy being a loner when everyone else nipped out for a fag, LOL.

Me. I Am Salman 29-12-2013 03:01 PM

you're serious??

Cherie 29-12-2013 03:16 PM

I started because I thought it was quite glamourous, I was only 13m didnt start properly smoking until about 17 and never at home....I was more of a social smoker, and never felt the need to light up as soon as I got up. I found it quite easy to give up and have not smoked since my early 20s.

Yup. And I'll continue because I enjoy it. Smoking undeniably contains grave health consequences, no one's disputing that, but you have to understand that beyond the ill-effects and addiction there are some people out there who simply like it.

Sounds retarded but that's honestly the clearest I can put it. Balancing out pros and cons etc.

But smoking makes you look cool

It increases the build-up of fatty deposits that block the arteries leading to stroke and heart attacks. Noone in their right mind wants to get a stroke. People show their ignorance and demonstrate their obvious lack of knowledge and understanding of this.

By the time this reality dawns on many, it will be too late. Scary how some refuse to learn from the increased advances in medical knowledge.

It's not due lack of information of how cigarettes damage your body that people chose to smoke. They knew they could get addicted and risked it so just let they do whatever they want with their lifes as long as they respect non-smokers. This whole demonization of smokers annoys me and I don't even smoke.

I disagree. There is a big difference between being told something and understanding it. I think many young people simply don't 'register' the information they are given because they don't want to. Most will live to regret it, and that is very sad as by then the damage has often been done and unfortunately it affects many more people than just that particular individual.

Never saw the 'coolness' myself of standing outside the school gates in the middle of winter trying to spark up in the wind with a near empty plastic sh*tty lighter you had the abnormally big lad with the facial hair get you from the corner shop.

It's interesting, it's the exact opposite of how things were when smoking was being promoted heavily by the companies as this cool must-have accessory... people were ostracised from things if they didn't smoke. There's that Friends episode where Rachel pretends she's a smoker so she can be a part of all the important decision making outside when they go for their cigarette breaks. I don't have anything against people smoking but I'm glad there's a lot of pressure on people to stop or never start - my grandad died of lung cancer from smoking so much and it was just such a needless death, he could have easily had another 10-15 years left in him like my granny, his wife, but he died relatively young in his 60s... just makes me sad. My older brother has smoked/quit/smoked/quit/smoked over the last 15 years, most recently starting again on his wedding day five years ago because he was nervous. Crazy.

Eating junk food is the major cause of premature death not smoking

and premature death is only caused by cigarettes if some nerd decides to tell me to put it out lol

Livia 30-12-2013 07:49 PM

My uncle died because of smoking. He was hit by a Rothmans lorry.

arista 02-01-2014 07:12 AM

Yes I know of many that would not stop smoking
and are now gone.

Kizzy 02-01-2014 07:44 AM

I've been a non smoker now for over 10yrs, stopping on and off through my 20s. I had my first cig at 17 as a goth trying to look all mysterious and stuff.
I'm now addiction free (finally), I do believe in how some swop one addiction for another though.

Livia 02-01-2014 06:10 PM

Smokers have had to look at pictures of diseased lungs for decades... looking forward to the pictures of diseased livers on the labels of bottles of booze any day now... and pictures of breathless, morbidly obese people on any product with processed sugar or fat in it. I'm sure they'll have as much impact as the latest anti-smoking pictures.
