Elder Scrolls Online predicted to be biggest gaming fail of the year

- Sub based WITH "free" to play elements (Microtransactions)

- People so far are very unimpressed with the beta

- Story set before any of the TES games, therefore not exploring any new story territory.

- Have to compete with the already successful console MMOs (FFXIV) and PC MMOs (World of Warcraft, who are bringing a big new expansion out around the time of TESO's launch)

- Development costs of $200m, they'd need 7m subs to pay that cost back, only WoW has reached those numbers.

- It is trying to be Skyrim/Oblivion and it simply isnt.

It's gonna crash, Zenimax better make sure Fallout 4 is ready soon.

Ahaha, there's no way it's not gonna flop

It definately will with those development costs, there is no way they can raise enough cash to make a profit on the game, for evidence, the Old Republic cost the same, and look how that turned out.

Aye, plus it's a WoW clone just like TOR..really wish someone would try something new

Dumb decisions everywhere, the MMO market is too crowded and it'll never get the audience of FF and WoW. They'd have better served their time and money by simply working some optional online features into the next REAL Elder Scrolls game.

I don't understand how such a project could even get off the ground without someone on the team realising how bad an idea it was.

I have to admit I read your first post as "There's no way its going to flop" :joker:

I hear Everquest Next is apparently going to be quite different. I'm really enjoying Final Fantasy XIV at the moment though, its a traditional MMO, but it has the right amount of charm, and they're constantly adding stuff (housing and PvP over the holidays), not to mention it'll be the first portable MMO come April. I think Zenimax know that TESO is going to crash, and they're just trying to make as much money as they can before it goes bad, lol.

I hear they did originally start work on TESO in 2007, so it was probably already too late for them to cancel it when the MMO market became over-saturated.

Biggest fail of the year confirmed.

Yeah i didn't sub beyond my free month. oh well. i enjoyed it. just didn't give me enough to want to continue playing

It just has an overall 'meh' feeling to it, the Elder Scrolls world has always been so interesting because you could interact with it, without that, the world just doesn't seem as interesting, that and the fact that its a prequel.

Pay to play is a dying model for online games, Only WoW and FFXI (and presumably XIV will too) have managed to keep a steady audience over a period of years.

Subscriptions will soon be a thing of the past, micro transactions are the future, for better or worse.

Indeed, I don't mind subscription MMOs as long as everything else is free, what annoys me is when they mix sub with free to play.
