Do you know your neighbours?

Something on the TV just now about people in the UK not knowing their neighbours... do you know yours? We live at a house at the end of our street so we've only got one proper neighbour next door; and then on the other side we have the backs of houses and their gardens facing the side of our house, separated by a fence. We used to know the elderly woman who lived in one of those houses but she was moved into a nursing home, and our proper neighbours next door are really anti social, you're lucky if you get a hello out of them, so we don't speak to them very much.

Used to speak to people who lived on the street who were my age but they all moved away when we were quite young and now it's quite an elderly street, lots of old couples... always wished we had cool next door neighbours with kids my age.

Just on a "I'd speak to you in the street" level

We still visit our old next door neighbours, and speak to our new ones in the street ect

Not really, one set is a woman and her kid, nice lady, the others seem alright but constantly smoke weed/start random bonfires with their furniture

Livia 02-01-2014 06:44 PM

My nearest neighbours, not counting the horses and the sheep, are my parents. So yeah, I know them!

Marsh. 02-01-2014 06:44 PM

Yes. It helps I grew up on the street so know a few families from playing with their children.

We live on a main road so we don't really communicate, well we do with the ones on the left, the ones on the right just moved in though and we've only spoken really when they are out and parcels get left here.

Yeah, most people down my street have lived there for a long time so everyone knows each other.

Marc 02-01-2014 06:59 PM

Yes I do. Do you know my neighbours Greg?

Chuck 02-01-2014 06:59 PM

I know most of them I'd say, some for a really long time but as this is World Cup year the ones I didn't know before I'll get to know now because about 2 months before the event takes places some of us go to every single person of our street to collect some money to buy paint and flags to decorate our street somewhat like these:

What is that they are using in the sky?

AnnieK 02-01-2014 07:06 PM

Yeah I know my neighbours quite well. The guy on one side always comes in to watch the football as they don't have sky sports so he here a lot!!

smeagol 02-01-2014 07:06 PM

they dont know me but they know what music i play as they post enough notes about it lol

Josy 02-01-2014 07:15 PM

Yes we know all our neighbours really well, enough to walk into each others houses without knocking and the closest one is my dads aunt so my second aunt.

MTVN 02-01-2014 07:19 PM

Used to have an old couple next door to us we knew really well, nice enough even if they were a bit annoying, but they moved out and another old couple replaced them but they're never to be seen. Occasionally see them do a bit of work in their garden but never talk to them really and they don't get involved in village life at all. The house just along from them though we've known for ages

That's really cool Chuck :amazed:

MTVN 02-01-2014 07:24 PM

Wouldn't give Chuck a single penny if he came knocking round my door wanting money for some silly decorations

Kate! 02-01-2014 07:25 PM

Just moved so no, not yet. Prefer not to get too involved with other people's lives, I'd always say hello and exchange small talk but that's enough for me.

Nemo123 02-01-2014 07:29 PM

When I was a child I lived in a cul de sac with 58 houses in it and I knew the surname of all of them and the christian names of most of them. Moved when I was 17 to the house I live in now, and I've known the changing residents of about 4 or 5 households.

You wouldn't be able to afford living in my street.

MTVN 02-01-2014 07:37 PM

I could live like a king in Brazil

Jessica. 02-01-2014 07:40 PM

I don't know much more than their names. Would barely say hi to them.
