Tesco UK Sales Decline 2.4% Over Christmas

Tesco's chief executive is under further pressure as the UK's biggest supermarket chain confirms its festive season performance.

[Tesco is blaming "further weakness" in
the UK grocery market for a
fall in sales over Christmas.
The UK's biggest supermarket
chain said sales at British stores open
over a year, excluding fuel and VAT,
fell 2.4% in the six weeks to January 4.
The company - led by chief executive
Philip Clarke - is 21 months into a
turnaround plan for its main
UK business that has seen over
£1bn invested in store revamps,
more staff,
new product ranges and pricing initiatives.]

Nah, everyone's just shopping at ALDI and Asda Walmart

Josy 09-01-2014 09:38 AM

Morrisons reported the biggest loss I think, at least that's what the news I was watching said then m&s reported a rise in food sales but a loss in general items.

smudgie 09-01-2014 09:39 AM

My heart bleeds for them.

arista 09-01-2014 09:39 AM

yes Morrisons soon to get a Ocado Deal
will get better.

Livia 09-01-2014 10:23 AM

People are shopping smarter, they have to. Also, fewer and fewer people are taken in by supermarkets marketing ploys and their amazing "deals".

That'll be all those millions of workers who refuse to touch pork causing those problems I bet :fist:

I think there are too many Companies in this market now and I expect soon we will see some buyouts or take-overs:-

We might get:-

LIDLALDI
SPARTROSE
TESCOOP
MARKS & SAINSBURYS
MORRIASDA

and of course ICELAND but no one is going to merge with them cos their food is ****e...!!

The deal morrisons had over christmas was good, I'm surprised that didn't poach a few more. We recently had an aldi open nearby, I was really chuffed... but the stuff is rubbish, and some things only coppers cheaper thanks to their massive marketing campaign.
Tesco is rubbish, used to be reasonable but now very expensive especially for meat which is of bad quality as it looks off on the shelf!
Can't really comment on asda as haven't been to one in a while, it's mahoosive the nearest one. When I have gone i've found the bargains are spread more equally across all departments not just pop crisps or chocolate.

Nedusa 09-01-2014 02:31 PM

I agree TESCO has become too big, almost a victim of its own success. it tries to be all things to everybody and as a result the overall quality is reduced.

Aren't they owned by Walmart now or is that ASDA either way far too big selling to many diverse products so you end up with a load of low quality, cheap tat...!!!!

To be honest I'm not really bothered about which supermarket I shop at, I usually just shop at whichever one's closest to where I live regardless of prices. At the moment it's a little Tesco metro or an Aldi.

Nedusa 09-01-2014 06:48 PM

Is Tesco Metro the same as Tesco Express ??

I've honestly no idea what the difference is, I just use them interchangeably to mean "a small Tesco with only the essentials in it" - some have Tesco Metro on the sign, others have Tesco Express, honestly don't know the difference

Tesco has gone seriously downhill over the last few years... the one near me is awful. Really awful. Looks like it needs refloored (and generally looks a bit dated), the layout is abysmal, and they are ALWAYS running out of stock. And on top of that - it's usually the most expensive for everything except JUNK. Endless offers on nuggets, pringles, frozen pizzas and softdrinks... pricey on everything resembling actual food.
