this year in an effort to almost
double the size of its high-speed rail network.
The investment forms part

China is a big country with a large population, they need high speed trains. This a sound investment.

I think China has many of the same problems that Russia has in that it tries to modernise its most important cities in order to match Western infrastructure but it hasn't attended to the needs of the vast majority of its citizens who live in abject poverty in rural areas and/or have no real attachment to the coastal cities and their modern lifestyles. Say what you want about the USA but national pride and being the great achiever is all part of "the American dream" and even though the USA has its own problems with poverty, the standard of life for America's poor is still way better than their equivalents in China. China might be expanding its high speed rail but how does that help the millions of people living inland who work on farms and just about manage to keep things ticking over? Nowhere in the world is perfect but I often feel that China jumps straight past the most basic steps in helping the country to prosper in order to get to the end result faster; more or less ignoring internal problems that don't affect Shanghai, Beijing, Hong Kong etc. Then again, you could say the same about the UK and how London always comes first. Meh... totally gone off topic
