Five million people are hiv positive in Africa.
Just take a moment to think about that number! 17 percent of Africa's population.

Ninastar 24-01-2014 08:36 AM

I'm thinking about it and.... What are you wanting us to do?

None of us on here can do a single thing about it

if you speak to someone today, which no doubt you will, just bring it up in conversation, and you will be making someone else aware of that number.

if only a few thousand of that number travel to a few other countries then this subject will be a world wide problem not just Africa's.
im not saying aids is only found in Africa, its a problem that needs to tackled.

Somehow I cant see that revenue stream trickling down to healthcare, education and raised standards of living for the populace

HIV in Africa is never gonna end unless they find a cure so idg why people give so much money.. I'd rather give money to an animal charity or childrens charity

Me too. It pisses me off when people preach about Africa. They have a corrupt government. Everyone on tibb could donate every single penny they own, we could all sell our cars/houses/kids to make money and it wouldn't make an ounce of difference.

Africa is a political, social and economic black hole because of what European settlers did to it. There aren't enough hours in the day to go through every single reason why it's so difficult to help improve anything in Africa. HIV isn't just a health problem. For social and cultural reasons, attitudes to sexual health in Africa simply don't exist. It's an alien concept to most people, using a condom, vast swathes of people don't even have access to clean drinking water or have enough food; trying to change people's attitudes to sex just comes across as condescending, in a way. So the spread of HIV/AIDS isn't so much a health problem as it is a cultural problem - people can have sex on a regular basis but they can't eat or drink on a regular basis; why is anyone trying to take that one thing away from them (i.e. use condoms)? It's sad really... every well meaning person who donates money, goes over to build something or tries to preach for change cannot possibly tackle the logistical nightmare that is Africa.
