Susan Boyle applies for job in betting shop

SHE may be a world famous singer, but it seems that Susan Boyle is still keen on having a regular part-time job.

The 52-year-old star is said to have enquired about a vacancy in her local betting shop in Blackburn, West Lothian, on Thursday afternoon - but it is unsure why.

"Susan Boyle walked into the shop and inquired about the job advertised in our window. We were all in shock," deputy shop manager David Corr told The Sun.

Despite being worth more than £20million, it seems that Susan saw the job post for a £100-a-week part-time customer service assistant in the Ladbrokes shop window, and then decided to find out more.

A customer who saw Susan in the bookie's said: "She explained she was really keen on working there and everyone knows who she is and that she lives nearby. The manager laughed at first. But it was clear she was being serious and they couldn't just dismiss her so gave her all the information.

"Obviously she doesn't need the money, so I think she saw it as a way of getting out of the house and taking her mind off things," the local continued.

"I have seen her around the town and she can appear a bit lonely. She likes to be with people who know her and will look out for her. You often see her in the shopping centre but I have never seen her come into the bookie's.

They added: "She is very down to earth and likes the simple things in life. But it was a totally unreal scene for a superstar multi-millionaire to be at the bookie's asking for a job that pays the minimum wage. I have never seen anything like it."

The shop, which is a short walk from Susan's ex-council terraced house, is looking for someone to work 16-hours-a-week job and will be paying £6.31 per hour which will rise to £6.45p after training is completed.

But it's highly unlikely that Susan is bothered about the rate of pay considering she has sold more than 19million albums worldwide, and is set to have a film made about her life.

It's been reported that the Scottish singer actually applied for a job at the same branch before finding stardom on Britain's Got Talent back in 2009, and will still be considered now even though she is famous.

"Every applicant is judged on their merits. She's applied before and it's great for us that she's still dreaming the dream," a Ladbrokes spokesman told the newspaper.

Susan declined to comment when she was approached yesterday.

and Not Record Label people

Kazanne 26-01-2014 04:53 PM

She probably just wants to feel usefull and be around normal people

Good for her to want to be doing something like a job. However I would prefer someone who had hardly any income and needed the job more to get it really.

She could actually open a betting shop or some other shop herself and employ people if she wanted to.

Then - and I say this as a poor soul who has been managing in a bookies for almost 4 years - she shouldn't even ENTER one let alone want to work there! Unless her definition of "normal people" is exceptionally skewed, and her idea of "being useful" involves taking money from people who probably can't afford it, and have no hope of ever winning much of it back.

That aside: I don't know how busy the shop in question is, but if its even close to the one I'm in, the job isn't as easy as it looks! It's fast paced, high pressure and involves constant mental arithmetic combined seamlessly with shouting at junkies. Without losing count. I've seen perfectly mentally sound people lose it on bad days, I don't think it's a great idea for someone with bipolar disorder tbh...

she was on benefits and hadn't worked in decades before BGT though, right? or did she work at a betting shop?

she was presented as a shut in that nerver left the house on BGT.

Even that shop has made her the 10,000/1 outsider.

Good for her.

If she gets it i'm presuming the shop will be sending out invites for #susansanalbumbettingparty.

RichardG 26-01-2014 05:52 PM

I hope she doesn't get it

It's nice that she's not been changed by her success but if she really is worth £20m like the article claims then that job needs to go to someone who actually needs the money.

HD 26-01-2014 05:53 PM

She's obviously got the money, why doesn't she work in a charity shop and let someone who needs the money have that job.

Or maybe charity is beneath her. :hmph:

Samm 26-01-2014 06:19 PM

There are more people who need the Job then she does I agree she is being selfish she has got lots of money more people need money then she does

lostalex 26-01-2014 06:33 PM

I am sure she could find some voluntary work.

Let someone that needs the money have the paid work.
