The Representation Project - Social constructions of gender

There's been a few threads over the last few days (and during CBB actually) about different forms of gender inequality and so I thought I'd post this, it links in quite well with the one thesheriff created actually. Having come across one of their film trailers before that was circulating on Facebook (I'll post them below), I decided to check this site out earlier and am pleasantly surprised with what I've found.

Here's a little bit about who they are:

Quote:

OUR MISSION
The Representation Project is a movement that uses film and media content to expose injustices created by gender stereotypes and to shift people’s consciousness towards change. Interactive campaigns, strategic partnerships and education initiatives inspire individuals and communities to challenge the status quo and ultimately transform culture so everyone, regardless of gender, race, class, age, sexual orientation or circumstance can fulfill their potential.

OUR HISTORY
Jennifer Siebel Newsom’s film, Miss Representation, premiered to great acclaim at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2011. In response to overwhelming public demand for ongoing education and social action in support of the message of the film, Newsom founded MissRepresentation.org in April 2011. A 501(c)3 non-profit organization, MissRepresentation.org continues to highlight and challenge the limiting depictions of women in the media and our larger culture, engaging millions of people along the way.

Even while making Miss Representation, the film, Newsom knew that exposing and challenging the gender injustices that limit girls and women in our culture was only half the story. She knew that we couldn’t move toward real cultural change without also exposing and challenging the damaging masculinity narrative that is fed to our boys and men. With our next two films, The Mask You Live In and The Great American Lie, not to mention the support we’ve received for them along the way, we know we are on the right track.

In late 2013, after two and a half years, MissRepresentation.org became The Representation Project, stepping into a new name and bolder agenda, one that requires all of us working together, girls and boys, women and men, to ensure equality and justice for all. As an organization, The Representation Project remains true to the message of Miss Representation that limiting stereotypes harm all of us and that women deserve a seat at the table. We take that commitment forward with us, as we tackle the biases that impact our larger society.
And here are the trailers for their two films about both female and male media and social inequality, highlighting gender stereotypes which cause problems on both sides of the spectrum.

The Mask You Live In
(Men)

The concepts of masculinity and femininity are quite damaging and these trailers are quite poignant IMO, I'm going to get round to watching the films eventually.

I came across that video about boys before. It's so important to acknowledge the media as well as social constructs and I think this organization captures that in quite an effective way. I really appreciate that the videos aren't just female-centric but also focus on the harmful repercussions of sexism and gender constructs for males. Thanks for posting this Jack, it was definitely a good read and conveys a very important message that is very relevant for our generation.
