Second 'Marius may be killed'

It's unbelievable, and really why would they have to think about whether they should dissect it in public? Some people are mad!

All they should do is say another Zoo
pay to transport it out

I back the judgement of zoologists and specialists that dedicate their careers to the understanding and protection of animals, over some simplistic British media and facebook campaign.

Sorry - but experts actually do know best.

lostalex 14-02-2014 09:27 AM

**** that giraffe. so ****ing irrelevant. people who care this much about animals, really have no idea what's going on in society, they bury their heads in the sand by focusing on animals. such a convenient distraction for them.

Wake the **** up.

I do to a certain extent, but did they really have to 'think' about whether it is right to dissect it publicly or even kill it,why can they not just castrate it? I cant help thinking this is a publicity stunt by the zoo, they are on the map now.

People are very sentimental (when it comes to anything but cows, pigs and chickens). I don't really understand it. At least they're feeding it to lions as is the natural order of things... I mean seriously... Go on safari and see a lion itself take out a little giraffe. They dony use a bolt gun to the head. They probably start eating its legs before its even dead. And all without crowds of humans standing around weeping.

I mean in all seriousness - what is the philosophical difference between slaughtering a cow and "murdering" a giraffe? Because we kill MILLIONS of cows every year for our own consumption... And (I seriously hope!) all of them are "healthy", too...

Public dissection is using a bad experience as a learning experience - so I'd say that's a pretty good thing for them to do.

Castration should never be seen as the humane course of action, and if it is a publicity stunt to get more people attending the zoo, then that can only be good for the rest of the animals at the zoo, surely?

I don't believe that specialists in their field who will all have PhD's, make decisions concerning the welfare of animals, based on alternator motives.

What's with all of the giraffes being called Marius anyway? Is there some sort of famous giraffe called Marius? Was there a film? Is it like when everyone started calling their kids "Jack" in the year following the first "Pirates of the Caribbean" film?

Human origin stories tell of a man called Adam. Girffe origin stories tell of a Giraffe called Marius.

It was ever thus.

and the ladies love it too. It's like Juan Pablo to giraffes.

I do think this is unnecessary, for me if it is a breeding thing why allow this Giraffe and others to be born in the first place.
These Giraffes were/are I understand 18 months to 2 years old.
As to the dissection of them publicly,I am all against that.

I also have to agree with Lostalex as well, I think zoo's do get a great deal wrong and are certainly not about the wellbeing of the animals they have.
Perhaps some really strong tightening up of zoo's practices needs to be done internationally.

Sadly as that is unlikely to happen then awful and sad situations like this will continue in some places.
Not however a good advert for zoos in my opinion.

I think the Giraffes in the wild should unite and hatch a plan to free their "imprisoned" cousins..... they need to act fast before anymore are killed like this.

It's only a matter of time before the animals unite and fight back....

Except there seems to be a clash of opinions where the so called "experts" are concerned. Some of those who have dedicated their lives to their field strongly disagree with Copenhagen Zoo and the decisions that were taken. If it was just a simplistic media/Facebook campaign I might agree. However, it's not.

Honestly though... Show me the internet campaign / experts in the field that are spending hours debating the fate of Mary - the cow I ate as a steak last week - and I might be able to take the plight of Marius seriously. Otherwise I can only assume that the entire thing is unfounded sentiment. Think about it: every zoo in the world that houses lions, tigers, and other carnivorous creatures must be slaughtering animals to sustain them. Cows, sheep, Maybe things like goats or deer. If someone can give me one, just one, valid reason as to why Marius has a greater right to life than any of those animals? Do I have to give them names? Maybe if I call the deer I saw a lion munching on at a safari park last summer "Timothy" and post pictures of him being mauled alongside a picture of bambi?

They killed an animal and fed it to zoo lions. The hysterics are baffling.

Well sadly ,cows ,sheep and pigs are bred for food,I don't think wild animals are, they are placed in zoos for humans pleasure and supposedly conservation.

Marius was born in captivity and so no more "wild" than a KFC chicken. The purpose of these creatures existence is a purely human concept: it means nothing to the animals themselves. The Aberdeen Angus isn't thinking, in its final moments, "well, I was bred to make a damn good burger so I guess this is fair enough, would be tragic if they killed a giraffe though."

Most of the public outcry is simply because "Marius" has been humanized. he's been named, had "cute" pictures attached to him and his very own X factor sob story crafted. Three old goats could have died in his place and no one would have batted a soggy eyelid... it's utter hypocrisy.

I don't see an issue with public dissection. It's not like they just start hacking away at it in front of these families. The people watching it will clearly know what they are going to watch, it is educational.

Also people kicking off abut the animal being put down because it was healthy, doesn't stop you all eating what is on your plates everyday or making a fuss abut it and I do believe that animal was healthy.

Yet these are still healthy animals. And the giraffe was fed to the lions.
