south east floods all down to greed

Notice how all floods in the north and in scotland and wales all dissapate after a few days...whereas those in the south east take weeks maybe longer

the population of england is 53 million , wales just over 3 million and scotland 5.3 million

but england is only 50,000 square miles, scotland 30,000

the population in england is over 1000 people per square mile and the 6th most populated per square mile in the world

scotland is 175 people per square mile
wales 370 per square mile

then look at the south east of england and london
over 5000 people per square mile

is this really sustainable with our ancient infrastructure and higher tides?

This is yet another example of why spreading the economic wealth and jobs and infrastructure around this small island is essential. the difference in the south east and wales is staggering...I went to live in north wales and its like landing on the the bright side of the moon. but the gap between the 2 is absurd

the country needs to set in place a plan to country the population and economic disaprity as a matter of grave urgency. the south east is so build up and over populated now, not just with people with the sheer amount fo land thats built on tarmaced, heck most people dont even have gardens to absorb the rainfall....it probably doesnt hep that all the waterworks infrastructure is french owned....hopefully this latest disaster will be heeded, but I doubt it

To take your argument and turn it around perhaps the floods are a good thing as they will force the Govt to now rebuild the railway lines and roads and think seriously about building future houses on known flood plains.

Sometimes it takes a war or a major act of nature to finally force Govt's to cut through all the red tape and other political crap and actually just find the money and get the job done.

Perhaps we could divert some of the Billions of pounds we currently give to poor needy nations like India,Brazil and Argentina.....??????

It was a joke about that politician who's blaming the floods on David Cameron for legalising gay marriage.

It was definitely not an offensive post, someone must have reported it.

Not sure I understand how the floods are down to "greed". Is it greed if people want to move to the south east for a better job? We all pay enough tax to ensure that the infrastructure should be sound. Not everyone who lives in the south east are from there originally. Are you saying they should be sent home? And if they're from another country, should we send them home also? It's a ridiculous notion. The population is ever-growing, and the statistics cited are iffy, as usual.

which ones are iffy>? please justify that? its pretty self explanatory than the south east has been massively over developed compared to the rest of the UK and tarmacced over vats areas. between the airport expansions, the enormous traffic explosion, the population increase, etc not only does this add to the pollution but it sees yet more green areas built over. all of which makes managing the environment even harder, especially with our rather archaic infrastructure.Im not blaming anyone who wants to go to the south east to make their fortune. I am however blaming the failiure of the UK to spread the jobs and wealth more around the country. outside the south east the rest of the UK falls further and further behind in terms of economic progress and infrastructure improvements.

all of which sees the south east take on ever more projects , more people , more pollution, more everything. spread the wealth to other areas, those areas desperately need jobs and investments, this in turn helps fight the disease of joblessness and higher alcoholic/drug rates in the more depressed areas...these areas have vast areas of land available (far cheaper too) ready for such projects and ease the pressure on the south east.
as we will see for weeks the south east damage will be worse and take longer to clear up. than heavens for the thames barrier, without that wed be looking at a cataclysmic disaster.

fair enough but the flooding seems to get worse every year and the endless expansion and the downward economic spirral elsewhere in the Uk will only worsen the damage done in the south east

I agree the South East has the highest standard of living in the UK, house prices are higher, wages are higher. People can afford to go on 2 or 3 foreign holidays per year, people have 2 or more vehicles. People in the South East can afford to eat out at least twice a week at proper restaurants (Not McDonalds). People really do have a better life in the South East.............or do they ???

House prices are higher but houses are tiny as there is no land to build on, in Central London you need a million punds to buy a half decent family home, flats are routinuely sold in excess of 500K. if you rent you are fleeced by unscrupulous landlords and have no real security. Nobody talks to anyone in the south, not very friendly (most neighbours don't even speak english).

People need to work all hours in the day to make ends meet and both partners need to work and then pay out extortionate amounts of money for childcare. The roads are pretty much block most of the time so you cant really go anywhere quickly, the Airports are shocking (in some instances flying time for a long haul flight is actually shorter than the time it takes to get to and from the Airport) you cannot plan a road trip because chances are you will be stuck in roadworks for 6 hours or some other hold up.

Going into Central London is a joke with Congestion charges and traffic cameras everywhere (make one wrong turning and its a £60 fine). parking a nightmare and over zealous traffic wardens will clamp your car quicker than you can imagine should you be 10 seconds late back from your business.

You have to queue for everything, the light and air pollution is stifling, you pay over the odds for everything yet we are told London's the place to be.

Can't afford London then commute into London....great so now pay £6,000 a year to stand in a cold smelly train compartment assuming of course the trains or underground are not on strike....Yea real good value for money.

It's all lie of course living in London or the South east may be the highest standard of living, BUT it's by far the lowest quality of life.......

It could be greed in terms of not taking climate change seriously.

That what the Bridge II taught me

I agree. good post. this further illustrates the advantages of spreading the wealth and jobs more. the quality of life is not great in London and district, its a concrete jungle and its getting worse.

the mass of buildings and roads and tarmacced woodlands and tarmacced gardens across the south east massively damages the areas ability to cope with the massive rise in rainfall and sea levels....the saturation point is frequently reached and its getting worse

so spread the wealth, devolve some jobs, its better for the environment, better for a more balanced quality of life throughout the UK and can also counter act the social problems we see develop in poorer areas, which cost us a fortune in benefits and lost taxes too.

the truth 20-02-2014 10:19 PM

the floods in the north and scotland and wales have all dissappated ....the floods in the south havent. because of the vast over population....the vast over building flood plains in the south all due to the economic imbalance. roads traffid homes, hotels , offices , planes , airport expanions etc the answer of mp's? carry on and spend more cleaning up the mess
