Apparently the new writer wants this one to be a bit more like old Trek than flashy lens flare. Could be good! (Not that the other two were bad)

Director Robert Orci has apparently left the project, it is quite possible that Jonathan Frakes (Riker from TNG) may be brought in to direct.

Quite possibly, I kinda hope that the franchise will go back to being what it was, rather than the OTT action fest it became.

Thank god, I'd rather have someone like Pegg writing, he gets Trek more than more recent writers/directors

The new Star Trek movie script has to be done by June, as Simon Pegg chats about penning the new film.

Simon Pegg is currently undertaking promotional duties for his new film, Kill Me Three Times, and as part of that, he's been chatting to Collider about the new Star Trek film, that he's taking on co-writing duties for this time around.

Pegg is penning the script along with Doug Jung, and he admitted that "the timeframe we're working in is extremely tight. It means we're having to come up with the goods. We can't be lazy about it".

How tight? Well, the screenplay needs to be done by June ("come hell or high water"). "The production is hammering on the door asking 'when can we build this? What are we gonna build? Who's in it?". "It's an interesting process", he notes.

How is he approaching the film? With some reverence. "I have to abide by certain rules and do right by the original series, and not be too post-modern with it and not be too aware of itself. I have to try to take on the spirit of the show, rather than fill it with stuff that people will just go 'oh, yeah, that’s from episode something or other'. It’s more than that".

He also touched on how he got the writing job, recalling that he and producer Bryan Burk were chatting about the direction to take the film, and musing whether "we should go back to the drawing board, a little bit, with the screenplay". It was after these discussions that Burk invited Pegg to take a crack at the script, something he adds is "a big responsibility".

The new Star Trek film, which Justin Lin is directing, will be released on July 8th 2016. Kill Me Three Times gets its US release next month, meanwhile. We don't yet have a UK release date for it.

Star Trek 3 actor and co-writer Simon Pegg is back with more insight into the development of the upcoming sequel film, talking to Den of Geek about approaching the story from a new perspective.

[The responsibility is] terrifying. We learned a lot. It's interesting actually, I had certain issues with "Into Darkness" as well. It's interesting to be able to take those forward and be at the helm a little bit.

You're always learning when you're working with a series of movies because you go okay, what did people like there? What did people not like? What did we like? And that's a crazy way to work because we're shooting in summer come hell or high water.

So Doug Jung and I are just sort of hashing out the story and meanwhile people keep coming in and going, "So can we build that? Can we design that now? Can we make that costume? What are you wearing? How many people? How many planets?" You're like, "I don't know. Let us try and ****ing think of the story." But that's how the process is working.

"Necessity is the mother of invention" is our mantra at the moment and it's bringing out the best of us. It has to. We have to come up with the goods. It's good because there's not room to be kind of like, "Yeah we'll take a break today; we'll sort that out next week." It has to happen and we have to write it and it cannot be bad. It has to be good and it has to meet a certain criteria which we set for ourselves.

On the original Bob Orci / JD Payne / Patrick McKay script, now discarded:

[Our script is] completely new. I haven't read Bob (Orci)'s script and they didn't want us to. So we went back to the drawing board. We had creative meetings with [director Justin Lin] and there were things he wanted in there.

I haven't written like this before. I've never been a custodian of something, it's usually mine what I'm writing. Whereas with this, you're given a bunch of stuff -- "Look we want this in it and this in it." Or Justin will say -- he's got an amazing visual mind, Justin. He's great at that kind of choreography.

So he'll say, "What if this happens?" So Doug and I go, "Okay, right, let's try and get that into it."

On taking Trek 3 back to the franchise roots:

[This one is] more about spirit. It's very easy these days, in the kind of post-modern era, to get bogged down in self referentiality or thinking, "Oh, let's put Harry Mudd in."

In a way I felt like if anything -- and I really, really am very proud of "Into Darkness" -- but I feel like the thing that for me was kind of jolting was that it kind of wanted to embrace itself a little too much, rather than take off and do what "Star Trek" did, which is to go off into the depths of the galaxy.

It was about referencing not only a previous film but also kind of hanging onto the coast of Earth a little bit. So for me it's now about the spirit of adventure and exploration and also, in modern terms, just how would that be for people, to be away for that amount of time and that kind of stuff. We're trying to evolve the story at the same time as not letting it go.

["Star Trek" is] a beloved franchise and we're very aware of that. And also it's also fun. These days people kind of think, "Oh, things have got to be serious." You've got to see a lot of soul searching and what if you saw this character being all dark?

"Star Trek" was very, very optimistic -- it was all about forward motion and the human condition. I feel like that's what it needs to be.

The next Trek film is slated for release in July 2016.

Yay! It's not an origin story or a rehash! Thank god lol. Looks like it will be fun.

James 14-12-2015 10:29 PM

^The destroying the Enterprise was in Star Trek 3 also though.

Beastie Boys soundtrack. :umm2: I hope the whole soundtrack of the film is not like that, cause that wouldn't be very Trek.

Anyway, film could be good, impossible to say from trailers really. They just put all the spectacular action bits in them.

Scarlett. 14-12-2015 10:46 PM

Yeah, people are freaking out about it, saying its all action, of course forgetting this trailer was made to be shown before Star Wars, lol.

I wonder if the do a Star Trek (1)4, they'll have a new Enterprise? lol

James 15-12-2015 01:02 AM

Some people have said it's like Guardians of the Galaxy. I haven't seen that though.

This is a great interview, I like the idea of blending old trek with new trek

Hello Captain Kirk :flutter:

I would rather have a new TV show. The movies have always been meh, but the shows were amazing especially TNG and voyager. I don't really like the characters on the original series.

arista 18-12-2015 08:56 AM

I wonder if JJ cheated on the 3-D
and did it after.

Like his other Film in which he saved millions
by stopping using 3-D cameras
and adding 3-D by digital machine after
which did not work.

Doesn't bother me, I can't stand 3d. Gives me a headache, dulls the colour vibrancy and causes motion stutter when the camera pans. No thanks. I'll watch my films nice and flat please!

Parody.

Some of the other videos on that Youtube channel are really good btw, like the Star Wars prequels redubs. :thumb:

"It's heroin. ... ... ... ... Come on, boy."

Just read that new character Jaylah was inspired by Jennifer Lawrence's character in Winters Bone and they called her J-Law while they thought of a name which just changed to Jaylah

Vanessa 27-07-2016 02:01 PM

I'm watching it tonight in Imax 3d :amazed:
