'This newspaper does not indulge in supermarket-bashing. The big food retailers in this country generally do a good job in providing high-quality food at prices that people can afford. They responded quickly and, in the main, effectively, when the horse meat scandal was reported. When farmers complain about standards for fruit and veg being too exacting or too uniform, the supermarkets are entitled to respond that these standards reflect what their customers want.

But supermarkets have responsibilities, too, and could do more to live up to them. They could do more to inform customers about when food would be simply past its best and when it would be risky to eat.'

'This newspaper' needs to get off the fence on this one it is entirely the fault of supermarkets that we were fed horsemeat unfit for human consumption and yet they get all prissy about 'what consumers want ' when it comes to straight bananas?!

I don't give a stuff if my nanas are straight or my carrots are bent.... as long as I'm not duped into eating some scabby hoss!

A trailblazing ‘pay as you feel’ cafe in Leeds - which uses the city’s food waste to feed its customers - has been going from strength to strength.

In November last year, the YEP reported Leeds chef Adam Smith’s plans to open a cafe which used unwanted food to cook for the masses - who then paid what they felt it was worth.

The cafe opened in December at The Hub, on Chapel Lane, Armley, initially as a kitchen in a community centre but now there are hopes to raise enough cash to buy the building.

On Sunday Rachel and Pudsey candidate Jamie Hanley attended a launch service for the Leeds (West) Food Bank at the Oak Church in Farsley.

The Food Bank distribution centre opened on 27th January 2014. Their aim is to open a new distribution centre every 3 months throughout 2014 - Bramley next, followed by Farnley, Stanningley and Pudsey. The Food Bank have already supported 280 people in the West Leeds area this year so far.

A new distribution centre opening every three months... In the 3rd largest city in the UK, what does that say?

pot and kettle with this story and we are all told to constantly reduce waste yet it happens on a mass scale and we seem to turn a blind eye ? do i think this will work ? not on your nelly - no doubt we will have some debate going on the wrightstuff or a politics show this week telling us all to toe the line and recycle and all that yet on a mass scale we are d waft with the damage being done.


i smell bureaucracy on a big scale.

This has been going on for ages though. It's not a new thing...

and they seem to get more viewers every time they debate the same subject.
