Is the word 'bully' thrown around too casually nowadays?

Has this word become the new card people pull out on cue to garner sympathy/get themselves out of situations.

Yep definitely.

Bullying is obviously a massive issue and things like social media, internet forums and websites etc have given bullies a much bigger platform to carry it anonymously without repurcussions but the word is such an overused term that's been cheapened by people using it to describe things that really don't come under bullying.

Yeah I kinda agree... I guess it's a tough subject though because everyone is different - I know that when I was a kid, if someone even slightly made fun of me I would find that really upsetting, burst into tears and be miserable; whereas other kids wouldn't stand for that and would have a comeback and it wouldn't be an issue at all... and then as teenagers; somebody getting beaten up every day after school and somebody who gets made fun of for being a little bit overweight could both feel as bullied as one another but obviously one of those is more obviously 'bullying' than the other, yet there's only one term that gets used to describe that experience (bullying) and it doesn't seem right to try and make a differentiation between types of bullying because that sort of cheapens it and makes a mockery of anyone who's ever felt bullied... oh you were only getting made fun of, no one hit you or stole your things or pushed you around, it's not as serious as that...

bully

troll

racist

there is a difference about being critical and bullying - it is a fine line and this is the catch 22.

Withano 27-04-2014 03:08 PM

I don't think it's thrown around enough. Some thread of mine got slated by TiBB cos I called Jazmine Lennard a bully.. After she bullied people...

If anything being "really entertaining" is thrown around too much and is used as an excuse for awful behaviour

Withano 27-04-2014 03:08 PM

Oh wait, this isn't a Big Brother thread

Withano 27-04-2014 03:08 PM

I'm still bitter about it though

yeah but like a lot of other words.

the pc peeps started it. and people got wise knowing hey we have all these cards we can now play when were in trouble. the bully card the race card and so on. its all a get out of jail card or get someone put in jail card so to speak.

big brother is where ive seen it most though.

Samm 27-04-2014 06:15 PM

yeah it is and people try and use to make people feel sorry for them, there's at least one person who uses it in like every TV show, Big brother, XF, BGT
