Alternatively Michael you could make school a more interesting and entertaining place that said children will want to attend, in an environment where they feel comfortable, liberated and free to express themselves in whatever way they wish.

Actually the reason they're deterred from staying in the profession is because they're treated like sh*t and constantly undermined by your government with ridiculous ideas like PRP and the fact in academies actual qualified teachers are being replaced by every day workers in order for the school to save some money. Get your act together you silly ****ing ****.

Sanction or punishments have always been given out to parents for truants anyway.

Not sure what they expect parents to do to guarantee behaviour in class though, short of turning up at school with them what the hell are they supposed to do to make sure the kids behave?

Withdraw child benefits from parents of children that persistently truant?

Benefit entitlement should be nothing at all to do with things like this, threatening parents of truants with that is just ridiculous IMO.

I really do agree with his last paragraph, and yet as jack says with the standard of teaching at some academies even if poor gifted children have the ability there will be nobody to harness that talent.
linking education and financial hardship, he's crazy! what if you have one who loves school and excels and one that does not.... do you get half your child benefit?
No wonder he's fixated with victorian fiction, it's the most dickensian thing I've heard!

Of course he assumes that the worst behaved kids come from families on benefits. After all, well-off kids are all immaculately behaved, right?

Sigh.

Thinking of the 3 "worst" kids in my year at school (back in ye olde days when I was a schoolboy)... NONE of them were on benefits. One of the worst (who later became involved in smuggling firearms for the IRA!) came from a very normal middle class family. Another's parents owned a 4-star hotel. And the absolute worst of them, who started actual fist fights with teachers and I believe ended up addicted to heroin, had a dad who worked in the oil industry on upwards of £300,000 per annum.

But yeah. Stop child benefits. That'll solve everything.
