Former Big Brother 2010 housemate Keeley Johnson has won a substantial compensation payout from production company Endemol four years after she broke her ankle on the show.
Keeley – now 34 – incurred the injury during a ‘Save & Replace’ task in the eleventh series, which was the last to air on Channel 4.
The challenge involved its players dressing up as spiders and trying to escape a ‘bath’ – a large semi-circular ramp – but Keeley stumbled, causing her to break down in agony.
After being taken out of the house, she underwent two operations, and later opted not to return so she could recover away from the cameras.
According to The Sun, Keeley filed a lawsuit against Endemol, despite having signed a disclaimer as part of the contract that all housemates are required to accept.
Big Brother bosses later accepted that they were to blame, as the footwear provided as part of her task costume was too big for her size three feet. They have agreed to pay Keeley ‘thousands’ of pounds in compensation, though an exact amount has not been disclosed.
She told the newspaper: “I expected to do daft tasks on the show, but I also expected to be taken care of. It’s taken years, but I’m glad to see justice at last.”
At the time, tabloid reports suggested that Endemol was nervous about potential legal action, with a Daily Star source saying: “Technically she has suffered an accident at work and like any employee she can seek legal advice to see if there is a case for compensation.”
Keeley entered Big Brother 11 as a latercomer 31 days in to the run, lasting just two weeks before her unfortunate exit.
