Brother Leon 19-08-2014 07:24 PM

Damn,Earl

-Hasn't heard the song or watched the Video-

Shaun 19-08-2014 09:18 PM

this the same earl whose first track on his first album was called this*****ugly? whining about perpetuating black stereotypes? ok

Brother Leon 19-08-2014 09:24 PM

Watched the video. It's no different than Miley videos really. Miley is cool with a load of rappers though so I suppose she gets away with it more in their eyes

i haven't seen much yet but i'm sure there's gonna be loads of complaints about her 'cultural appropriation'... just about every music video is getting pulled up for it lately. it's so stupid, especially when it's something like Katy Perry wearing a pharoah's crown or headpiece... like who the hell is that going to offend? how can you "appropriate" a culture from 2000+ years ago, when we've more than likely descended from it at some point down the line anyway?

I can understand the complaints where a race is being made out to look like an accessory, like those videos with cute little Japanese girls acting all pink and pretty and whatever (Avril Lavigne and Gwen Stefani got in **** for that) but it's getting to the point now where you can't twerk because that's a black dance, you can't wear a feather headdress because that's an american Indian thing, you can't wear a sari, or a bindi, or a hijab... and it's always white people getting offended on these cultures' behalf

edit: oh and that Lily Allen video was a perfect example of it lol... she makes a point about women being used as props and then gets called out for using women of colour as props (despite there being two white girls too)

Not a fan of this. It's also not offensive in the least, people just look for things to get offended over.

Could we merge these together? I've got a main TS thread:

We always have individual threads for single releases

Okay! :amazed: I was only wondering, cause Shaun wasn't aware last night that there was a TS thread.

:worship: Queen T.

Benjamin 22-08-2014 11:43 AM

Would this be her first UK #1?

Shaun 22-08-2014 05:13 PM

yeah, I'm amazed WANEGBT wasn't #1.

Smithy 22-08-2014 08:29 PM

don't think it'll get #1 it's falling quite quickly on iTunes now

Brother Leon 22-08-2014 08:42 PM

I Knew You Were Trouble or even the Harry Styles song should of been her #1. This is weak really.

Niall 22-08-2014 09:07 PM

I like it. Not as immediate as any of the singles from Red mind, but I'm sure it'll grow on me.

The problems that arose with the Dark Horse video were mainly that whites have appropriated the whole of ancient Egyptian culture; in modern depictions of ancient Egypt there's hideous whitewashing all over the place rather than Egyptians being depicted as the PoC that they actually are. That background plus her decision to use and entire culture as a motif and fashion statement is why she got called out all over the place for it.

And Lily is just another in a long lineage of white women using women of colour as subordinates in the name of feminism. It's not intentional per se, but it's an established thing that tends to happen in pop culture..
